Venezuela's Hugo Chavez Stands by His Old Ally Gadhafi

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has refused to condemn the bloody crackdown being carried out by his "friend," Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, and warned that the U.S. is preparing to invade the North African nation and steal its oil reserves. "Since everybody is going around saying Gadhafi is a murderer, is Chavez going to say it?" the president said in a speech to students in Caracas, according to Agence France-Presse. "Well, I do not know that to be the case. And from this distance, I am not going to condemn him. That would make me a coward, and he has been a friend for a long ...

Cuba to Get High-Speed Internet, Thanks to Venezuela

One of the world's most unplugged countries is about to get high-speed Internet, courtesy of an old friend. A specialized ship began laying fiber-optic cable under the Caribbean Sea from Venezuela toward Cuba this past weekend, launching a $70 million project to connect the communist island nation with better phone and Internet service. Internet access in Cuba currently has to go through satellites to get around U.S. embargo restrictions, which ends up being costly and slow. The new fiber-optic cable is being laid by a French-flagged ship from the company Alcatel-Lucent, and paid for jointly ...

Venezuelan Ex-President Carlos Andres Perez Dies

CARACAS, Venezuela -- Former President Carlos Andres Perez, whose popularity soared with Venezuela's oil-based economy but who later faced riots, a severe economic downturn and impeachment, has died in Miami, his family said Saturday. The 88-year-old Perez's daughter, Maria Francia Perez, said her father had died in a Miami hospital. "He was happy and well when he awoke this morning. Suddenly he had difficulty breathing," she told The Associated Press. She said he was taken to a Miami hospital, where he died. She told the Venezuelan television channel Globovision he had died of a heart ...

Venezuela Congress Grants Chavez Decree Powers

CARACAS, Venezuela (Dec. 17) -- Venezuelan lawmakers granted President Hugo Chavez broad powers Friday to enact laws by decree, undermining the clout of a new congress that takes office next month with a bigger opposition bloc. Chavez opponents condemned the move as a power grab, saying the law will be a blank check for the leftist leader to rule without consulting lawmakers. The National Assembly approved the special powers for 18 months. A new congress goes into session Jan. 5 with an opposition contingent large enough to hinder approval of some types of major laws. Opposition lawmakers ...

WikiLeaks: Russia Rebuffed US Over Missile Sales to Venezuela

(Dec. 9) -- Even while the United States sought to improve relations with Russia as part of the Obama administration's policy of "reset," behind the scenes U.S. diplomats made little headway on the contentious issue of arms sales, according to secret diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks. Over a period of at least four years and as late as last year, diplomats lobbied Russia to halt arms sales to Venezuela, expressing particular concern over an advanced man portable air defense system, or MANPADS, called the Igla-S. Russian officials, in turn, repeatedly rebuffed those requests, maintaining ...

Scores Feared Dead After Colombian Landslide

(Dec. 6) -- Up to 200 people are believed to be buried beneath rubble from a deadly landslide that destroyed at least 10 homes in the northwestern Colombian city of Medellin. Emergency teams using sniffer dogs have so far rescued seven people, the BBC reported, and one body has been recovered. However, the scale of the tragedy means that the death toll from Sunday's landslide will almost certainly climb in the coming days. "We are focused on moving rubble to see if we find survivors," Cesar Uruena, a Red Cross operations deputy director, told Agence France-Presse. "The landslide buried 10 ...

Canal Plan May Have Prompted Nicaragua's Incursion Into Costa Rica

Canal Plan May Have Prompted Nicaragua's Incursion Into Costa Rica

(Nov. 11) -- Reports of the recent Nicaragua-Costa Rica kerfuffle focused on Google Maps, which was blamed for inaccurately drawing the border line between the two countries. But the story behind the incident is much more serious. Nicaragua's incursion may have been part of a broader plan involving Iran and Venezuela to dig a channel to rival the Panama Canal, according to Haaretz. "Sources in Latin America have told Haaretz that the border incident and the military pressure on Costa Rica, a country without an army, are the first step in a plan formulated by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez ...

Chavez's Anti-US Imperialism Tour Rolls On

(Oct. 21) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has arrived in Syria for talks with his Syrian counterpart, Bashar al-Assad, the latest stop on a foreign tour intended to counter what he calls U.S. "imperialism." Chavez flew to Damascus on Wednesday night after a two-day visit to Iran. During his stay in the Islamic Republic, the leftist leader signed 11 energy and trade agreements that will bolster cooperation between the two OPEC members, including a deal to establish a joint Iranian-Venezuelan oil shipping company, Iran's state-run Press TV noted. The outspoken leftist leader also ...

Chavez's Opponents Make Congressional Gains

CARACAS, Venezuela (Sept. 27) -- President Hugo Chavez's opponents blocked him from capturing an overwhelming majority in Venezuela's congressional election, making gains that could challenge the firebrand leader's tight grip on power. With the vast majority of votes from Sunday's election counted, Chavez's socialist party won at least 96 of the 165 seats in the National Assembly, while the opposition coalition won at least 61 seats, National Electoral Council president Tibisay Lucena said early Monday. The remaining eight seats either went to a small splinter party or had not yet been ...

Four Russian Arms Deals That Worry the US

Four Russian Arms Deals That Worry the US

(Sept. 22) -- The Pentagon has put the word out that it is concerned about Russian arms sales to the Middle East, a move likely to set off another round of accusations between Washington and Moscow. The United States has long criticized some of Russia's arms deals, and for several years the U.S. even blacklisted Rosoboronexport, Russia's state arms export agency, over allegations that it provided weapons to Syria and Iran in violation of U.S. law. But those sanctions were removed earlier this year as part of a broader effort to improve relations with Russia. Like the United States, Russia is ...
