Opinion: DC Is Hottest City in the World (Sorry, NYC)

Opinion: DC Is Hottest City in the World (Sorry, NYC)

(July 8) -- It's pretty stupid to brag about the weather in your hometown. You had nothing to do with it, no one cares, and everyone thinks you're a bore to prattle on about it. I mean, take Washington, D.C. Right now it's 90 degrees with high humidity. My head hurts and my thighs are sweating. (I'm told that outside my office it's much, much hotter.) D.C. is the hottest city in the world, and we are the toughest people on Earth to put up with it. Don't believe me? Check this out: The high temperature Wednesday in El Obeid, Sudan, was 97 degrees. Right now, as I write this, the temperature in ...

Melee Shuts Down Washington DC's Union Station

Washington D.C's Union Station was briefly closed Friday afternoon after a large group of teenagers beat a 16-year-old boy on a station platform, leaving him seriously injured. The boy's mother told The Washington Post that her son was attacked over a pair of Air Jordan brand sneakers, and said she watched as the assault unfolded. The teenager was rushed to a local trauma center with non-life-threatening injuries, and has not been identified. "A lot of guys teamed up on a young boy. It was real bad," witness Larry Barnes, 20, told the Post. Initially, there were reports of a shooting, but ...

Cherry Blossom Fever: Not a Moment Too Soon

Cherry Blossom Fever: Not a Moment Too Soon

Oh, they're back, in all their whisper pink splendor, zillions of cherry blossoms bursting into flower just when we're all so very over winter. With Washington poisoned by toxic political debate and vicious death threats, these fleeting arboreal symbols of friendship between the United States and Japan -- allies, enemies, allies once again -- are more welcome than ever. They've been around since 1912, when 3,000 trees, some of them descended from species cultivated back in 1500, arrived here by boxcar from Seattle after a Pacific crossing. The first two were planted in a simple Tidal Basin ...

Young Washington Mayor Challenged by Fellow Democrat

Young Washington Mayor Challenged by Fellow Democrat

The honeymoon ended a while back for Washington's young mayor, Adrian Fenty. But on Tuesday Fenty's relationship with voters took another turn as D.C. Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray, a fellow Democrat, announced he would challenge Fenty in his bid for re-election to a second term. Gray, 67, stressed his deep roots in Washington, calling himself "a dyed in the wool homie," born in the city and schooled there with a degree from George Washington University. He is former director of the city's Department of Human Services. Fenty, 39, was also born in Washington -- although he graduated from ...

Supreme Court Refuses to Overturn Washington D.C.'s Gay Marriage Law

Supreme Court Refuses to Overturn Washington D.C.'s Gay Marriage Law

Washington, D.C., can begin to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples Wednesday, now that the Supreme Court has refused to block the city's gay marriage law. Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the court Tuesday, supported the decisions of lower courts that upheld a City Council vote legalizing gay marriage, the Associated Press reported. Opponents had argued that D.C. residents should have been allowed to vote on the issue. "It has been the practice of the court to defer to the decisions of the courts of the District of Columbia on matters of exclusively local concern," Roberts ...

Between the Lines: Ethics Report on Marion Barry - Money, Power and Sex

Marion Barry is former mayor and currently a member of the District of Columbia City Council representing the city's Ward Eight east of the Anacostia River. He is a near mythical figure in the politics and history of Washington. There have been books written and movies produced about the former freedom rider, who once shared the civil rights torch with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The striking 6-foot-plus figure ran Washington in the city's infancy and, like many frontier sheriffs, Barry had a Wild West style of leadership. He was the second person to sit in D.C.'s version of city ...

Our National Maul: Looking for a Plan to Save the Grass

Our National Maul: Looking for a Plan to Save the Grass

WASHINGTON (Feb. 17) -- One year ago President Barack Obama took the oath of office on the steps of the U.S. Capitol. The crowd of half-frozen well wishers stretched nearly to the Washington Monument, four million feet inflicting even further damage on what is often called "the nation's front yard." Yet the National Park Service grounds keepers had the audacity to hope grass would sprout as usual on the National Mall come springtime. Still, as chief horticulturist Rob DeFeo notes, decades of heavy human traffic have taken a toll: "Basically, the bulk density of the soil is the same as cinder ...

New York Vs. Washington: Who's Cleaning Up Their City Better?

(Feb. 10) – Whether it's the Empire State Building versus the Lincoln Memorial or Nathan's hot dogs versus Ben's Chili Bowl, New Yorkers and Washingtonians find ways to compete over virtually everything – culture, food, sports, arts, nightlife, cost of living, even self-importance. This week's snowstorm adds another metric to the long-running list: blizzard response. We've been keeping score all day, here's where the duel stands as of Wednesday afternoon. Washington Shuts Down as Another Snowstorm Approaches

WASHINGTON (Feb. 9) – The most powerful people in the country may or may not live inside and around the Beltway, but as the blizzard-battered capital awaited a second Snowmageddon, many were beginning to feel helpless. "Federal emergency should be declared," wrote resident Kate Dell on the Chevy Chase listserv in Northwest Washington. "Wow, that is a great idea," chimed in fellow D.C. resident Dianne Fiumara. "I can't imagine why this is not employed. It is the Federal Government that's shut down and the Federal Govt should be able to employ itself to open back up!" You'd think. But ...

Opinion: Shutting a Door of Opportunity in D.C.

Opinion: Shutting a Door of Opportunity in D.C.

(Jan. 18) Back in 1947, Martin Luther King Jr., wrote in the Morehouse College campus newspaper, The Maroon Tiger, about his vision of a quality education. "The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically," he wrote. "Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education." But in the nation's capital, that vision is far from being realized. And one of the most promising education reform efforts enacted in the city is now being allowed to die a slow death. Washington, D.C, is a city with enormous educational problems. Two-thirds of the ...
