Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!AP and CNN have called West Virginia Democratic Gov. Joe Manchin the winner of the race to fill the U.S. Senate seat held by the late Robert Byrd. Manchin defeated GOP businessman John Raese. "I am somebody that believes very firmly in free enterprise and capitalism," said Raese, who also believes "Fox News is doing a wonderful job educating West Virginia." For his part, Manchin a two-term democratic governor, declined to endorse his party's president or Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid for their current jobs. According to some pundits, the choice for voters in the special election ...
A flood of new polls on this year's key governor and Senate races came out Sunday and Monday, and here are the ones that showed the tightest races and those where the margins are larger, but the outcome is still in at least some doubt. (You can find details of these polls, and links to them, further down this posting). -- One point separates Democratic incumbent Michael Bennet and Republican Ken Buck in the Colorado Senate race, according to Public Policy Polling. Fox News/Pulse Opinion Research gives Buck a four-point lead. -- The race for governor in Connecticut, where Republican Jodi Rell ...
Republicans will edge close toward control of the Senate Tuesday but are unlikely to be able to seal the deal. While the GOP is widely favored to win back the House, it faces a narrower path to victory across Capitol Hill. Political prognosticator Charlie Cook calls the chances of Republicans picking up the 10 seats they need to wrest the upper chamber from Democratic control "non-existent." Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, chairman of the Republican Governor's Association, told CBS' "The Early Show," that the House will likely flip, but "it's harder in the Senate. It's more of a ...

INWOOD, W.Va. -- On a recent Saturday in October, West Virginia's Gov. Joe Manchin darted from event to event in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains, working without prepared speeches or much staff to speak of. He surfed across a schedule that began with a ribbon-cutting for a local elementary school and wrapped up hours later at a farm party for the Berkeley County Democratic Women's Club. In between, he gave a pep talk to campaign volunteers, stopped inside Collins' Barber Shop to chat up surprised customers, and gave commendation awards to elderly West Virginians at the Bank of Charles ...
Our latest roundup of polls on key governor and Senate races includes Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Wisconsin. Like Ohio, Pennsylvania could be one of those states where Republicans could walk away with both the governor and Senate seats. In Ohio, the Senate race looks out of reach for the Democrats but they still have a chance in the governor's race, although winning it will be an uphill battle. In Pennsylvania, the governor's race appears to be a sure shot for Republican Tom Corbett, who ...
Our latest roundup of polls on key governor and Senate races updates Arizona, California, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Nevada, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Wisconsin. Ohio has always been a pivotal state, especially in presidential election years, and is considered a bellwether for which way the political trends are going. Ohio voters have been staggering under the economic downturn which has hit their state especially hard. President Obama's ratings there have sagged badly. Democrats are in danger of losing both the races for governor and Senate. That would ...
John Raese, the tea party-endorsed Republican candidate for Senate in West Virginia, is not new to West Virginia politics. Raese is a former chairman of the state Republican Party and is on his fourth run for state-wide office, having run (and lost) against Jay Rockefeller for Senate in 1984, Arch A. Moore for governor in 1988 and the late Robert Byrd for his Senate seat in 2006. But Raese seems to be having more success this time around and is now in a dead-heat with the state's popular two-term governor, Joe Manchin, the Democratic nominee. "I think the people in this country have ...

The biggest news so far today in these polls is the Colorado governor's race. If you thought the Senate race was tight (a new poll has Democrat Michael Bennet and Republican Ken Buck tied), former Republican Rep. Tom Tancredo has battled his way to within three points of Democrat John Hickenlooper, the mayor of Denver. For Republicans, this contest has been a ...
