But a long line of activist presidents – both Democrats and Republicans – have altered the original intent of the Framers so that a degree from an Eastern elitist law school is now almost a constitutional necessity. If Elena Kagan (Harvard Law '86) is confirmed for the Court, all nine justices would have received their legal training at Harvard or Yale. This is one of those moments when you sense that American democracy is more of a rigged game than they taught you back in high school civics ...
BRANFORD, Conn. (April 26) - A doctor was charged Monday with fatally shooting a Yale University doctor and firing at the victim's pregnant wife after a history of confrontations with the victim and other colleagues that led to his dismissal from a New York hospital. Branford police said 44-year-old Lishan Wang is charged with murder, attempted murder and firearms offenses in the fatal shooting Monday of Vajinder Toor outside his home. Police say Wang, a Chinese citizen from Beijing who was last known to be living in Marietta, Ga., also fired at Toor's wife, but she was not struck. Wang is ...
NEW HAVEN, CONN. -- A string of homicides has rocked New Haven over the past two weeks. Five murders over an eight-day period renewed concerns among community leaders about the rising rate of gun violence here and rattled students at Yale University, many of whom live in an off-campus neighborhood where one of the crimes occurred. Several of the murders took place along a group of New Haven neighborhoods known as the "crime corridor," which has been marred over the past few years by gang violence and drug-related crime. In response to the outbreak of homicides, New Haven Police Chief Frank ...
Campuses all over the nation constantly struggle to maintain good relations with their host cities. It's mutualistic: colleges and universities provide innovation, technology and bustling life, while the town or city provides a temporary home for its students. The relationship gets tricky when the school and its community clash over campus issues. Generally it's something benign, like tensions over excessive noise and partying, and there's always the chance of crime on campus. While seemingly placid, problems with dining services can bring the campus to a boil. After all, college kids can't ...
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Dec. 16) -- The fierce debate over health care hasn't led to a new law yet, but it's produced some of this year's top quotes, according to a Yale University librarian. Fred Shapiro, associate librarian and lecturer in legal research at Yale Law School, is releasing his fourth annual list of The Yale Book of Quotations. His top quote: "Keep your government hands off my Medicare," by a speaker at a town hall meeting in South Carolina in July. "That struck me as embodying the friction and polarization on the role of government," Shapiro said. Shapiro picks quotes that are ...
I see that police in New Haven, Conn., have lost little time tracking down a lab technician whose bloody clothing was found hidden in the building where that poor bride-to-be was murdered. The missing Yale graduate student, Annie Le, whose wedding to James Widawsky was to have been Sunday, was seen on the security video entering the building a week ago, but no cameras caught her leaving, leading detectives to refer to blueprints of Yale's state-of-the-art medical structure at 10 Amistad St. to discover where her body was hidden. ...
