Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!(Nov. 20) -- Everyone knows the old cliche – Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. But what do you say when you get fooled the third, fourth, fifth or sixth time? That's what supporters of health care reform might want to ask themselves 'round about now. After all, early promises made about the health care reform law enacted in March keep falling by the wayside. Here are a few of the big ones: It will be good for Democrats in November. In mid-March, White House adviser David Axelrod told CNN that reform would help Democrats in the midterms. And Robert Creamer ...
(Sept. 13) -- When it comes to the rapidly mounting problems of Social Security, we need to both "see the big picture" and do something about it. In a piece with that title, the September 2010 AARP magazine asks that we do the former but says nothing about the latter. I'm here to propose something. Rather than rhetoric about privatizing the whole system, which will simply not fly in today's environment with its distrust of equities, or head in the sand rhetoric denying that anything needs to be done, we should focus on marshaling political support for some real fixes by acknowledging that ...
You might not need to worry quite so much about Granny getting behind the wheel -- a surprising new study has concluded that seniors are now getting into fewer fatal car accidents than ever. A nine-year study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found a 37 percent decline in fatal automotive incidents among drivers aged 70 and older. That decline sharply outpaced the drop in accidents among other age groups. Nonfatal accidents also dropped for seniors, even though they increased among middle-aged drivers. Even the researchers are surprised. "The stats are running counter to what ...
Talk about interesting contrasts. As Rep. Michele Bachmann's "freedom-loving Americans" swarmed Capitol Hill to wield verbal pitchforks against health reform, the House bill slated for a vote Saturday evening picked up support from organizations whose members will be deeply affected by it. President Obama hailed the news as a sign of growing momentum for reform. Seniors have been among the most worried about what exactly Congress has in mind for them and for Medicare. But AARP, the leading advocacy group for people over 50, on Thursday endorsed the House bill. The nonpartisan group's CEO, ...
A quartet of bipartisan heavyweights from outside Congress is feeling pretty good about the prospects for health reform. The climate is different from 1994, they said Wednesday, because they trust each other, they agree on more than they expected, and everybody stands to benefit through better insurance or more business. The panelists -- former Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle, former Republican Rep. Billy Tauzin (now president of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America), AARP executive vice president John Rother and Ron Pollack, executive director of the consumer group ...
Just as President Obama complains about the "misinformation" about health care proposals spewing from his opponents, one of his allies has caught him in some misinformation of his own.At his lovefest town-hall session in New Hampshire on Tuesday, the president denied charges he intends to cut Medicare benefits. "We are not," he said, "AARP would not be endorsing a bill if it was undermining Medicare. Okay?" ...
On Deck is The FanHouse's look at the day's most intriguing matchupsBaltimore Orioles (33-43) vs. New York Yankees (36-38)-7:05PM Est.As we told you about yesterday, for the first time in MLB history seven pitchers over the age of 40 will be starting for their respective teams today. One of those pitchers is Roger Clemens, who's still going for the 350th victory of his career. After fighting so hard to get above the .500 mark, the Yankees have now lost three in a row to fall two games under. The last we saw Clemens he was appearing as a reliever for the Yankees, but today he's back in his ...
