Teen Sailor Returns to California Home, Stays Quiet

(June 29) -- The American 16-year-old whose failed attempt to sail solo around the world triggered a massive international rescue effort and criticism of her parents has arrived home in California. Abby Sunderland arrived at her parents' house in Thousand Oaks, adorned with welcome balloons, late Monday night. She returned in an unmarked black car and was escorted inside by an unidentified man. She didn't speak to the crowd of reporters outside, but her blog says she plans to address the media later today. Lionel Cironneau, AP Abby Sunderland, 16, leaves the Reunion island, a French ...

Abby Sunderland and Other Free-Range Kids: An Endangered Species?

Abby Sunderland and Other Free-Range Kids: An Endangered Species?

Henry Rodgers has a tree swing in his backyard that hangs very close to another tree. In the middle of Arkansas' summer heat, he plays on it while other kids are inside watching movies or playing video games. He collects rocks and catches bugs, too. His recent addition to his insect aquarium: a fat lime-green horn worm. (But he confesses that he didn't find it; his dad did.) Henry, 7, doesn't play it safe. He doesn't mind dirt, sweat or even getting a scratch or two. Henry's childhood seems normal to me. I grew up a tomboy, playing baseball, popping wheelies and skateboarding in suburbia ...

Mother: No Reality Show in the Works for Sunderlands

(June 15) -- The mother of the California teenager rescued in the Indian Ocean during an attempt to sail solo around the world said a report that the family had signed a contract for a reality show was based on a misunderstanding. She said plans for the show were scrapped before her daughter began her journey in January, according to a news report. The New York Post reported Monday that Laurence Sunderland, a father of seven with an eighth on the way, was broke and signed a contract for a reality-TV show, "Adventures in Sunderland," weeks after his 16-year-old daughter Abby set sail on her ...

US Teen: Blame Ocean, Not Age for Situation

(June 12) -- A French fishing boat has rescued a California teenager stranded on her boat in the middle of the Indian Ocean after its mast snapped in rough seas during her attempt to become the youngest person ever to sail solo around the world. Abby Sunderland, 16, was feared lost at sea earlier this week when 30-foot waves smashed her boat and severed all satellite communications. She sent out distress beacons and an Australian search and rescue team chartered a Qantas airliner to scan the Indian Ocean to find her. "Crazy is the word that really describes everything that has happened ...

Teen Solo Sailor's Parents Face Sea of Criticism

LOS ANGELES (June 11) - What were her parents thinking? Many people were asking that question as a 16-year-old girl sat adrift and alone in the frigid southern Indian Ocean, her ship's mast dashed along with her around-the-world sailing effort. Abby Sunderland's ship was rolling in 20- to 30-foot waves as she waited to be rescued by a boat that was expected to arrive early Saturday morning Pacific time. She set off a distress signal Thursday after rough seas disabled her ship and her satellite phone reception. There were 20 hours of tense silence before a search plane launched from ...

Abby Sunderland Is a 16-Year-Old Sailor; Deal With It, America

Abby Sunderland is alive and well. Her boat is upright (see photograph, courtesy Australian Search and Rescue, on her blog). She'll be rescued within 24 hours by a French fishing vessel now speeding to her location. I'll bet her first interview will reveal she's not one bit sorry about her quest to become the youngest sailor to traverse the globe solo. The youngest, mind you -- not youngest girl. On June 10, emergency signals went off when Sunderland got caught in 25-foot waves in the wintertime Indian Ocean, a sea her brother Zac, who achieved the same youngest sailor feat when he was just ...

Abby Sunderland: Who Pays for the 16-Year-Old Sailor's Rescue?

Abby Sunderland: Who Pays for the 16-Year-Old Sailor's Rescue?

Amid the relief that the 16-year-old sailor from Thousand Oaks, Calif., has been found alive and well in the Indian Ocean, people are not so-quietly-asking: Who pays for the rescue effort related to the failed 'round-the-world excursion that has been described by one professional sailor as "foolhardy"? The answer, at least in part, is Australia -- and U.S. taxpayers. Australian authorities commissioned a commercial plane to search for Abby Sunderland, whose boat was pounded by rough seas about 2,000 miles off the coast of Western Australia. According to reports, Australian Maritime Safety ...
