Libyan Rebels Reboot Cellphone Service After Gadhafi's Shutdown

Libyan rebels who'd resorted to waving flags to communicate after Moammar Gadhafi cut off the Internet have now rebooted a local cellphone network for their own use. The new network, rigged up with help from U.S.-trained Arab engineers, is giving many Libyans their first chance in a month to contact loved ones and see if they're dead or alive. The Libyan dictator shut down all Internet service and mobile phone links to the rebel-held east more than a month ago. And as chaos and fighting spread, outages have hit huge swaths of the whole country as well. Chris Hondros, Getty ...

Report: Female Detainees in Egypt Forced to Take 'Virginity Tests'

Weeks after Egypt's vibrant, youth-led revolution, disturbing details are emerging about the treatment of some young female protesters briefly detained by Egyptian soldiers. Some of the women say they were strip-searched, photographed naked, beaten and forced to undergo "virginity tests" on threat of prostitution charges. At least 18 women were captured and held in military detention after army officers violently cleared Cairo's Tahrir Square on March 9, nearly a month after pro-democracy protesters ousted President Hosni Mubarak from power. After their release days later, several of them ...

The aircraft landed safely and no one was injured. ...

Secret Scientists Claim to Create Rain in Arab Desert

A secret scientific program to control the weather has seen artificially created storms rain down on the Middle Eastern desert. Recent reports say Swiss scientists working for the ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi last year successfully created 52 rainstorms in a usually arid region of the United Arab Emirates, using secret technology. Most of the storms were created in Al Ain, near Abu Dhabi, during July and August -- the height of summer when conditions are usually parched. Diamonds, Pearls Festoon Abu Dhabi's $11 Million Christmas Tree

Money doesn't grow on trees, but that didn't stop a hotel in the United Arab Emirates from decking out a Christmas tree with $11 million in decorations. In an over-the-top display of holiday opulence already acknowledged as an "overload" by the hotel management, staff at the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi covered a 43-foot-tall fake evergreen with jewelry, pearls, emeralds, sapphires and more than 180 diamonds. Called the "most expensive Christmas tree ever" by hotel general manager Hans Olbertz when it was put up last week, the arbor was supposed to make headlines by besting a $10.8 million ...

WikiLeaks' Key Revelations Focus on Iran Threats

(Nov. 29) -- U.S. officials have angrily condemned the release by WikiLeaks of hundreds of confidential diplomatic messages, with the White House calling the whistle-blowing site's online disclosure of leaked government cables "reckless and dangerous" actions that "put at risk our diplomats, intelligence professionals and people around the world who come to the United States for assistance in promoting democracy and open government." Republican Rep. Peter King, the ranking GOP member on the House Homeland Security Committee, urged the State Department to designate WikiLeaks a "foreign ...

What the Arab World Makes of the Ground Zero Mosque Plans

(Aug. 17) --- As the controversy over the "Ground Zero Mosque" ratchets up, it might be worth taking a look to see just what opinions about the building are actually percolating throughout the Arab world, or at least the Arab press. My old boss, Jamil Mroue, publisher of The Daily Star of Beirut, Lebanon, and a Shiite Muslim, just wrote an editorial praising Barack Obama's stance, but also arguing that Park51 should be less mosque, more cultural center: Islam has been grievously misunderstood, and we envision Park51 as a place of education about the religion -- and yes, at such a site ...

Michael Koncz, the adviser to seven-division champion and current WBO welterweight (147 pounds) king Manny Pacquiao, will stay in Abu Dhabi until Saturday in an attempt to work out what Koncz called a "multi-million dollar deal" for the United Arab Emirates to play host to Pacquiao's Nov. 13 clash with ex-titlist Antonio Margarito, Top Rank Promotions CEO Bob Arum, told FanHouse on Thursday. Arum told FanHouse on Wednesday that he had not heard from Koncz since his arrival in Abu Dhabi on Monday, but has since spoken to Koncz, who updated him on the negotiations' status.
