Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!Congress can continue to withhold federal money from ACORN following a federal appeals panel decision Friday that rejected a lower court's ruling about funding for the community activist group. New York's 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals reversed a decision by a district court judge that found Congress had violated the controversial group's rights by punishing it without a trial, The Associated Press reported. Federal funds for ACORN were cut off last year after the group was accused of violating the tax-exempt status of its affiliates with overt partisan politicking. ACORN also faced charges ...
(July 27) -- The right wing, starting with blogger Andrew Breitbart, thought it had a find when it discovered video of a black woman, little-known USDA employee Shirley Sherrod, talking about race to the NAACP. But the attack backfired when it emerged that Breitbart had taken Sherrod's comments out of a context in which she was laying out her own progress toward racial tolerance -- progress that Breitbart and his ilk actively resist. This is the same right wing that attacked ACORN, using a goofball who claimed he went into their offices dressed as a pimp and won a game of "gotcha." Except, ...
The Democratic National Committee has launched a web platform for activists to upload videos of Republican politicians' speeches, public appearances and unguarded comments, hoping to capitalize on ever-present digital cameras and smart phones to dig up embarrassing footage and audio of candidates and lawmakers. "The Accountability Project is a volunteer platform to document Republican candidates and their public statements at local events, as well as their campaign tactics," the project's website says. "For too long, our politics has been poisoned with misinformation, lies and double-speak. ...
A preliminary report from the General Accounting Office has cleared ACORN of allegations that it misused millions of federal dollars over a four-year span. According to the report, nine federal agencies gave the community group more than $40 million in eight housing-related grants from 2005 to 2009. There were no problems with seven of the eight grants, and ACORN supplied correct documentation for the eighth after it was notified the paperwork was missing. The GAO said it found no evidence of fraud or misuse of federal dollars. ACORN CEO Bertha Lewis said the report "does nothing more than ...
Self-styled investigative journalist James O'Keefe, 25, is not entirely a household name, yet. But ACORN certainly is, and that's in large part thanks to him. Now it's the U.S. Census that is receiving the O'Keefe treatment. Will the results be nearly as dramatic, for either the hunter or his quarry? First, a little background: The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), a low-income housing advocacy group, disbanded earlier this year in part due to image problems that resulted from O'Keefe's expose on the group circa September 2009. In the videos, posted on ...
Conservative filmmaker James O'Keefe and three others pleaded guilty Wednesday to misdemeanor charges in connection with an attempt to to tamper with phone lines in Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu's New Orleans office. O'Keefe was sentenced to three years probation, 100 hours of community service and a $1,500 fine, The Associated Press reported. The other three got two years probation, 75 hours of community service and $1,500 fines. O'Keefe, Stan Dai, Joseph Basel and Robert Flanagan were arrested in January on felony charges, later reduced to entering federal property under false pretenses, ...
ACORN, the liberal community activist group targeted by right-wing media and stung by an unofficial undercover probe, is shutting its national operations because of declining revenues, as some local chapters reorganize under different names. Funding problems led ACORN's board to decide Sunday to dissolve the group over the next few months, The Associated Press reported. State affiliates and field offices that haven't already split off will be closed by April 1. The board also approved a plan to resolve all outstanding debts and to determine whether ACORN would file for bankruptcy. "ACORN's ...
(March 22) -- ACORN, the liberal community activist group targeted by right-wing media and stung by an unofficial undercover probe, is shutting its national operations because of declining revenues, as some local chapters reorganize under different names. ...
ACORN is losing its state affiliates and is on the brink of bankruptcy. Once a body of more than 400,000 members and 1,200 neighborhood chapters in 75 American cities, ACORN has been pounded for the last six months following a now famous pimp and prostitute "sting." Documented by suspiciously edited videotapes, the political theater starring James O'Keefe III as the trick-turning avenger set off investigations by five federal agencies including the FBI and the Government Accountability Office (GAO), sparked several congressional hearings, led quickly to suspension of government funding, and ...
(Feb. 2) -- Conservative activist James O'Keefe calls his arrest after an incident at a U.S. senator's office "a huge misunderstanding." He appeared on Sean Hannity's Fox News show Monday night for his first interview since being busted along with three companions. O'Keefe -- whose hidden-camera videos embarrassed ACORN last year -- admitted they posed as telephone repairmen at Sen. Mary Landrieu's New Orleans office last week. He said they were checking out reports that the office wasn't answering calls from constituents who oppose health care reform. O'Keefe repeatedly said investigative ...
