FDA Reviews Research Linking Food Colorings and Hyperactivity

Artificial food dyes that enhance the color of processed, kid-friendly foods like Cheetos and Pop-Tarts have been used for decades, and the Food and Drug Administration has said they're safe. But with some studies tying the colorings to hyperactivity in children, an FDA panel begins two days of hearings today to review the research and decide whether more study is needed or whether foods with the dyes should carry warning labels. Before the hearing, FDA scientists said in a report that there was no definitive proof that food dye causes hyperactivity in most children, though kids with ...

Florida Boy, 8, Arrested at School for 5th Time

An 8-year-old boy who's been arrested five times since November for assaulting teachers at his Florida school has been released from juvenile detention because the judge said he's too young and small to be held. But the adjudicator chastised the pupil's mother for not getting him help. "He is your responsibility. We really do not want to be involved in his life," Orange County Judge Alicia Latimore told the boy's mother during a court appearance Friday. The boy, arrested for the fifth time last week, appeared in court surrounded by three Orange County Sheriff's deputies, WFTV in Orlando ...

Number of Therapeutic Use Exemptions in MLB Virtually Unchanged

NEW YORK (AP) -- Major League Baseball granted 105 exemptions for otherwise-banned stimulants in the last year because of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, virtually unchanged from the previous year's total. MLB and the players' union released the report Wednesday, covering a period that ended with the World Series. The ADHD figure has stayed about the same for four years. There were 108 therapeutic use exemptions in 2009, up from 106 TUEs in 2008 and 103 in 2007. Baseball management says the level of ADHD among young males is higher than for the general population. "My reaction is ...

ADHD Linked to 'Western Diet' of Takeout, Fried Food and Candy

(July 30) -- Yet another reason to rethink a diet heavy in fried, packaged and processed foods: It could be the culprit to blame for the childhood development of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A study out of the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research in Perth, Australia, evaluated the diets of 1,800 teens, 115 of whom had been diagnosed with ADHD before the age of 14. Dietary habits were divided into two categories. A "Western diet" consisted of takeout, packaged products -- in other words, plenty of saturated fat, sodium and sugar -- and few fresh fruits or ...

Rice Krispies May Not Be So Healthy After All

Snap, crackle, pop, and poof! The Kellogg company has agreed to drop its advertising claim that Rice Krispies cereal can strengthen a child's immune system. Here is a video of a commercial for the cereal that features the contentious health assertion: In Feb. of 2009, Kellogg had also stopped telling consumers that Frosted Mini Wheats helped improve a child's attentiveness by 20%, Reuters reported. The U.S. Trade Commission had gone after the company, calling both claims "problematic." While agreeing to stop promoting what the trade commission sees as bogus health claims, Kellogg did ...

Marijuana Prescribed to Kids with ADHD

Marijuana Prescribed to Kids with ADHD

(Nov. 24) -- In California, the state with the nation's most permissive medical marijuana law, several doctors say that some children with attention deficit hyperacitivty disorder, or ADHD, are being treated with marijuana -- a fact that has sparked a heated debate. Reliable figures on the use of marijuana to treat ADHD are hard to come by, as reported by The New York Times. Though California says it has issued more than 36,000 medical marijuana cards since 2004, the state does not compile statistics on prescriptions for specific conditions, such as ADHD. And many doctors and patients are ...
