FAA Orders Inspections on 737s With Long Flight Life

PHOENIX -- The airliner whose roof ripped open 34,000 feet over Arizona has had a busy 15-year life: taking off and touching down more than seven times a day, on average, and possibly developing microscopic cracks in its aluminum skin each time. Federal aviation officials were preparing to issue an order Tuesday that calls for emergency inspections on 80 U.S.-registered Boeing 737 jetliners with histories similar to that Southwest Airlines jet, which had been pressurized and depressurized 39,000 times before a 5-foot-long hole opened in its fuselage. The order is aimed at finding weaknesses ...

Chinese J-20 Stealth Fighter Takes First Test Flight [VIDEO]

The Chinese J-20 stealth fighter has taken its first test flight out of the southwestern city of Chengdu, The Associated Press reports. The J-20 is being pegged as a possible rival to the U.S. F-22 Raptor, the only stealth fighter aircraft currently in use, yet skeptics maintain that the J-20 is roughly eight years from being ready for action. The open nature of the flight is being seen as a response to pressures from the U.S. and other countries pushing for greater transparency from the Chinese government and its military innovations and intentions. Check out this footage of the J-20 ...

Arianna Huffington in Airplane Blackberry Dispute

Media mogul Arianna Huffington experienced some pre-flight turbulence when she "defied" a United Airlines request for travelers to shut down all electronic devices, leading one incredulous male passenger "to get up from his seat in protest of her continued chatting and texting," the New York Post reported. A testy exchange of words ensued between Huffington and the passenger, who is identified as Plainview, Long Island, resident Ellis Belodoff, and both were "hauled off the plane for questioning," according to the Post. Police did not end up charging either Huffington or ...

Woman Gets Naked on Delta Flight From Chicago to New York

(Nov. 29) -- Here's one way to get a flight attendant to give you some extra blankets, even if you're not in first class. A coach passenger on a flight from Chicago to New York stripped naked, forcing flight attendants to cover her in a blanket and restrain her until the plane landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport, according to Newsday.com. As Delta Flight 6562 dropped altitude on Saturday night, the woman reportedly dropped trou. While the crew tried to calm her down, she allegedly shouted, "No! No! No!" The pantless passenger was taken into custody after the flight landed, ...

TSA Airport Screening: Come Die With Me

TSA Airport Screening: Come Die With Me

You are witnessing the death of an industry. What the eco-freaks could never do -- drum up significant support for mass transit -- the TSA has done in just one decade. Hard to believe there was a time when flying was glamorous, but glamorous, exciting and sexy it was from the 1940s through the 1960s. Stewardesses wore cute little suits, and passengers dressed up too. Airline meals weren't great, but they sure beat the tiny bags of pretzels we get now. Back in the day, the word airplane conjured up images of passengers disembarking in Honolulu, welcomed by young women holding leis. An ...

Veterans and Volunteers Rebuild Classic War Planes

Veterans and Volunteers Rebuild Classic War Planes

(Nov. 11) -- In a dilapidated hangar in a faraway corner of Brooklyn, N.Y., veterans -- some of whom served before the age of jet propulsion -- assemble model airplanes. Very big model airplanes. The Historic Aircraft Restoration Project, dubbed HARP by its members, is a program that allows former servicemen and aircraft lovers of all ages to spend their days rebuilding and refurbishing antique airplanes, from propeller-powered trainers to Vietnam War-era jets. "We don't restore them to fly them, we restore them to museum standards," said Dante Dimille, 77, a graphic designer by trade ...

Qantas Blowout Linked to Oil Fire in Rolls-Royce Engine

Qantas Blowout Linked to Oil Fire in Rolls-Royce Engine

(Nov. 11) -- Europe's air safety regulator says a midair explosion aboard a Qantas jumbo jet last week was probably caused by an oil fire in one of the plane's four Rolls-Royce engines and is ordering all airlines to examine and possibly ground planes that use the same type of turbine. Qantas already has grounded its fleet of six A380 double-decker planes, which took to the skies in 2007 as the biggest jetliners in the world. Last week's explosion and dramatic emergency landing marked the most serious problem with the Airbus model to date. Singapore Airlines grounded three of its A380s on ...

Planes Don't Kill People -- Plane Exhaust Does

Planes Don't Kill People -- Plane Exhaust Does

(Oct. 11) -- If you can't fly the friendly skies without a stiff drink or a sedative, take note: The fumes from airplanes are to blame for more annual deaths than actual airplane crashes. Maybe not the most reassuring of factoids, but one that offers a reminder of just how safe (relatively speaking) air travel really is. What's so deadly about airplane exhaust? Much like the exhaust that pours out of your car, plane fuel emits pollutants (like sulfur dioxide, for example). The particles are tiny, and that's what makes them so deadly: They can easily enter the human bloodstream and cause ...

Playboy Playmate Tiffany Livingston Detained After Midair Anxiety Attack

(Sept. 10) -- Steven Slater, meet your match: A Playboy playmate made heads turn on a JetBlue flight when she allegedly suffered a panic attack and tried to open the plane's door in midair. The New York Post reports that Playboy bunny Tiffany Livingston was in federal custody Thursday night after passengers saw her attempt to open the door on JetBlue flight 522 as it flew from Orlando, Fla., to Newark, N.J. According to a report in the gossip site TMZ, however, Livingston has been released and federal officials think she was trying to brace herself during a panic attack, not necessarily open ...

High-Flying Vulture Escapes, Posing Threat to UK Airplanes

High-Flying Vulture Escapes, Posing Threat to UK Airplanes

(Aug. 19) -- Vultures are typically depicted circling high above the desert or perched on a skimpy branch, drool dripping from their flesh-ripping beaks, waiting and watching the long, slow death of other animals (including humans) so they can have a bite to eat. But Gandalf, a 7-year-old female Rüppell's Griffon vulture, just bucked the typecast. During a public bird show at the World of Wings Center in Cumbernauld, Scotland, on Thursday, the star attraction either got caught up in a strong gust of wind or decided to make a break for it (reports are conflicting). Either way, she's gone now, ...
