US Customs Scanning Incoming Japanese Flights for Radiation

LOS ANGELES -- U.S. customs officials are scanning incoming airplane passengers from Japan for radiation, according to airport officials. Television anchor Frank Buckley of Los Angeles station KTLA told AOL News that he arrived at Los Angeles International Airport on Wednesday night on a nonstop Delta Air Lines flight after covering the Japanese tsunami. When he got to an escalator leading to customs, he saw uniformed personnel scanning the passengers. "It appeared to be two customs officials holding some sort of a device and sweeping it over people as they walked by -- across their chests ...

Magnetic North Pole Shift Affects Tampa Airport

The Earth's magnetic north pole is slowly heading toward Russia, according to scientists, but one of the places being affected by this is Tampa International Airport. Airport officials closed its main runway this week until Jan. 13 to adjust the taxiway signs accounting for the magnetic pole shift, Tampa Bay Online reports. The runway designation change was called for by the Federal Aviation Administration to reflect a previous National Geographic News report which indicated that the magnetic pole was heading in Russia's direction at almost 40 miles a year. Fists Fly but Not Much Else in Iced Moscow Airports

Fists Fly but Not Much Else in Iced Moscow Airports

(Dec. 29) -- New York's airports aren't the only ones dealing with backlogs from bad weather. Consider Moscow. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin slammed airport bosses today for leaving up to 20,000 passengers stranded for four days, after Moscow's main terminals were forced to shut down following an ice storm. Freezing rains covered runways and jets with a thick layer of ice over the weekend, causing a 14-hour blackout on Sunday at Moscow's largest airport, Domodedovo. That power failure left passengers waiting for their flights in the dark, with no information as to when their planes ...

East Digs Out From Blizzard; Travelers Struggle Home

The East Coast dug out and travelers struggled to get home from the holiday today after a monster snowstorm walloped the region, disrupting transportation and stranding people in planes, trains and automobiles, not to mention in buses. Though the worst of the storm was over by late this morning, a swath of heavy snow and slick, sometimes impassable roads made flying, driving and even taking the train difficult if not impossible. More than 7,000 flights were canceled nationwide, The Associated Press reported. Blizzard warnings were in effect from the Carolinas to New England through early ...

Snow, Ice Trap Passengers in Europe's Airports

PARIS - Travelers spent Christmas Eve camped in airports in Paris and Brussels instead of at feast-laden family tables, after new snowfall and shortages of deicing fluid trapped passengers and snarled travel across Europe. A scare about the security of a snow-laden terminal roof at Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport made matters worse, with crowds asked to clear out of a section of Terminal 2E. While travel in Britain was improving after days of headaches, snowfall stranded travelers in Ireland and Denmark and shut Duesseldorf airport in Germany for hours. The exceptionally wintry weather in ...

Big Freeze Causes Travel Chaos in Europe

LONDON -- A white Christmas looks almost certain in northern Europe this year, but few people are celebrating the prospect of yet more snow. After three days of blizzards, much of the continent's transport infrastructure has frozen to a standstill, leaving hundreds of thousands of travelers stuck at airports, at railway stations and even on freeways as they try to get home for the holidays. Paris -- where snow continued to fall this morning -- has been one of the worst-hit cities, with a quarter of all flights canceled from Charles de Gaulle airport this weekend. Airport operator Aeroports de ...

Travelers camped out at airports overnight. London's Heathrow Airport stopped accepting arrivals Sunday, causing havoc at the start of the Christmas travel rush. About 40 percent of flights were canceled at Frankfurt airport and Paris' Charles de Gaulle. Opinion: Why American Airport Security Is So Horrendous

(Dec. 3) -- Security checks at American airports have become America's most controversial topic. Yet most people assume the current system is doing a good job fighting terrorism but is merely too intrusive. In fact, this approach is also ineffective and even counterproductive. Terrorism on American internal flights is a low-frequency threat. It is hard to mount a sophisticated attack from within the United States in the post-Sept. 11 period. The number of potential suicide terrorists on planes is limited as is the number of good bomb-makers. Four Views on Airport Security Why It's So ...
