But Mohammed, the supposed mastermind behind the Sept. 11 attacks, says he killed Pearl anyway, according to military documents released by WikiLeaks on Monday and published by the Los Angeles Times, The Australian and other news organizations. AP Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl is shown after his capture in 2002. Military documents released ...
It's a simple, water-resistant digital watch that retails for about $11. But beware: It could sell you out as al-Qaida. A new batch of WikiLeaks files from Guantanamo Bay reveals a secret checklist U.S. investigators used to figure out whether detainees were really al-Qaida members. Among the criteria was the kind of wristwatch they were wearing. Shiho Fukada, AP The U.S. military says Casio F-91W watches like this one have been used in terrorist bombings by members of al-Qaida, according to Guantanamo Bay files released by WikiLeaks. The U.S. military lists the Casio F-91W model ...
KABUL, Afghanistan - A NATO airstrike earlier this month killed a key al-Qaida operative in Afghanistan - a regional commander in charge of suicide bombings and cash flow, the international military coalition said Tuesday. NATO identified the man killed in the April 13 airstrike in Dangam district of eastern Kunar province as Abu Hafs al-Najdi, also known as Abdul Ghani. The alliance said the strike also killed a number of other insurgents, including another al-Qaida leader known as Waqas. Al-Najdi, a Saudi citizen, directed al-Qaida operations in Kunar and traveled regularly between ...
KABUL, Afghanistan -- A militant who led operations in Afghanistan for an al-Qaida-linked terror group has been captured in the north where his fighters joined forces with the Taliban to step up attacks against Afghan and coalition forces, NATO said Friday. The senior figure from the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan was apprehended in Kunduz province along with two of this associates, the coalition said. NATO described the militant, whom it did not identify, as a key conduit between the IMU's leadership in Pakistan and senior Taliban leadership in Afghanistan. "He assisted both groups by ...
The spring issue of al-Qaida's English-language magazine calls Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi a "lunatic" who "pretends to be like a rock star," and says the terror network actually supports the wave of pro-democracy revolutions sweeping the Middle East. It's a surprising stance for al-Qaida, which has long lobbied against some Western-allied dictators in the Middle East but has always sought to replace them with Islamic law -- not democracy. Most Western analysts have described the terror network as increasingly isolated and irrelevant in recent months, as democratic change takes root in its ...
Though no one would have guessed it during his inauguration week over two years ago -- when President Barack Obama boldly ordered the closure of Guantanamo's detention facilities and the immediate suspension of military commissions -- he has just reversed course and lifted the ban on military trials for detainees. And as most would also find surprising, it's actually a win-win for his administration. First, it shows conservatives and independents that Obama is willing to govern from the center. Polls show most Americans support holding al-Qaida and Taliban-linked enemy combatants at ...
SANAA, Yemen -- Suspected al-Qaida gunmen killed six Yemeni officers and soldiers in three separate attacks today, highlighting Yemen's volatility amid weeks of massive anti-government protests and a "total breakdown" of dialogue between key opposition figures and the country's embattled president. The alleged al-Qaida attacks came the same day the U.S. Embassy in Sanaa advised all Americans to consider hopping the next jet out of Yemen due to terrorist threats and mounting civil unrest. Muhammed Muheisen, AP Anti-government protesters call for the resignation of Yemeni President ...
Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, denying the existence of any anti-government protests in his country, told Western media today that he is loved by his people and has no intention of relinquishing power. "All my people love me. They would die to protect me," the embattled leader said in an interview in Tripoli with ABC, the BBC and the Sunday Times of London. Gadhafi, who has ruled the country since 1969, said he felt abandoned by the United States and blamed the violence on al-Qaida. "I'm surprised that we have an alliance with the West to fight al-Qaida, and now that we are fighting ...
SANAA, Yemen -- Government supporters swinging clubs tried to drive anti-government protesters from a square in Yemen's capital late Tuesday, as tens of thousands rallied across the country in a widening campaign to bring down the president. The pro-government forces eventually withdrew from the square near Sanaa University. Eleven protesters were taken to a local hospital, two of them in serious condition, medical officials said. U.S.-backed President Ali Abdullah Saleh, in power for 32 years, has said that he will step down after national elections are held in 2013. But he has rejected ...
The nation's head intelligence official says terrorism is the top national security threat facing the U.S. homeland, and job No. 1 for the intelligence community. In remarks to a House committee Thursday, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said al-Qaida's core in Pakistan and its offshoots continue to be damaged by U.S. counterterrorism efforts. He says intelligence cooperation has averted potentially deadly attacks over the past year, like the package bombs sent on two U.S.-bound cargo planes. But Clapper says al-Qaida's offshoots in Yemen and Somalia will probably grow ...
