AOL News has a new home! The Huffington Post.
Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!(Oct. 26) -- I am always amused by the responses I receive to both my television appearances and my opinion pieces. Human nature is that only those who object fire off e-mails, and the anonymity electronic communication provides encourages much candor and few pleasantries. AOL has provided not only another forum for me, but one for those who wish to respond to me. A sampling of some recent (uncorrected and edited for brevity) e-mails: From: Steelstein Sent: Tue, Sep 21, 2010 4:21 pm Subject: Message for Alan Colmes your opinions are in the minority and truly not what most americans ...
(Sept. 3) -- Here, and there, someone occasionally takes slight exception to something I say or write. I posted something, for example, about a gathering on a mall in D.C. and how, at the very moment it was to begin, a flock of Canada geese flew overhead, and what a beautiful, miraculous, sign that must have been from up above, as stated by the rally's organizer. I don't know how those geese got past immigration, but that's another issue. I also wrote something about religious freedom, some crazy concept our founders had. Amazingly, my little articles attracted some negative comments from ...
(June 17) -- My piece after President Obama's Tuesday night speech praising him drew some less than positive reactions from readers. A sampling, along with my responses. From: Randy Sent: Wed., June 16, 2010 12:31 pm Subject: Message for Alan Colmes If I didn't know better, I'd think you were some kind of paid Obama cheerleader. I'm old enough to see that, when it comes to Obama, you remind me of one of those 13-year-old girls at the Beatles concert at Shea Stadium in 1964. I don't even know why I read your material. I guess maybe it's for the humor, because even any somewhat educated Obama ...
If we had to pick an overall winner of the year 2008, it would have to be Michael Phelps, who, despite being a swimmer, achieved celebrity status normally reserved for biathletes. But Barack Obama did pretty well himself, picking up the United States Presidency and three and a half million Facebook friends. And you know who also won big? The people riding Obama's coattails! Unlike the president-elect, who only got power and nuclear weapons, these people got money, fame and/or fulfillment of lifelong dreams. Let's meet them...Winner: Doris Kearns Goodwin. Her book on the Lincoln cabinet, Team of ...
As David pointed out, TIME's Person of the Year was really not too shocking, nor was it much of a contest. In fact, it amounts to such a non-news event that Political Machine has decided to take it upon ourselves to explore some more interesting categories than the catch-all "person" of the year. Who was the worst pundit this year? It was a heck of a year for bad punditry, but these four stand out to me as the obvious finalists. Bill O'ReillyLove him or hate him, he definitely can grab the spotlight with his on-air rantings. But this year, O'Reilly's most famous moment came from a widely ...
No sooner had David Knowles announced that Alan Colmes was leaving his semi-eponymous show, than Jay Allbritton was facetiously floating replacements. I'm certain that Jay only put me 8th on his list to avoid a charge of nepotism, but I was still disturbed by the tongue-in-cheek treatment. But then, I realized that Jay was right on the money. I can think of no more absurd notion than that of me mopping the floor each night with a conservative other than Caleb Howe. Therefore, Caleb and I are here to make the case for Fox News to replace Hannity & Colmes with Christopher & Howe. I further propose ...
Sean Hannity's sidekick, Alan Colmes, has decided to call it quits after 12 years of playing second-fiddle to his right-wing counterpart. Earlier, he released the following statement:"I approached Bill Shine [FNC's Senior Vice President of Programming] earlier this year about wanting to move on after 12 years to develop new and challenging ways to contribute to the growth of the network. Although it's bittersweet to leave one of the longest marriages on cable news, I'm proud that Sean [Hannity] and I remained unharmed after sitting side by side, night after night for so many years."No word yet ...
Hey, here's a surprise. Sean Hannity loves fellow right-wing radio firebrand Bill Cunningham. The latter is a frequent guest on the former's show, after all. So neither Hannity, or co-host Alan Colmes, is really surprised by the vitriol Cunningham spewed at a John McCain rally yesterday. McCain, on the other hand, seems to have just woken up to the fact that the man he asked to warm up his audience in Ohio yesterday is, and always has been, an idiot. But hey, you go to war with the Army you've got. I guess Gallagher was already booked. Have a look at the woeful state of conservative punditry. ...
