American Airlines Plane Slides Off Runway at Jackson Hole Airport

An American Airlines plane skidded off the runway as it was landing at an airport in Jackson Hole, Wyo., today amid heavy snowfall, federal officials told AOL News. No injuries were reported on Flight 2253, which originated in Chicago, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said today by phone. There were 181 people -- 175 passengers, two pilots and four flight attendants -- aboard the Boeing 757, the spokesman said. Passengers were driven to the airport terminal in buses. American Airlines spokesman Ed Martelle told reporters the plane had a "long rollout" when it landed at 11:37 a.m. ...

Suspicious Package Closes Newark Airport Terminal

NEWARK, N.J. -- Officials say a terminal at New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport has reopened after a computer monitor caused a precautionary shutdown. FBI agent Bryan Travers says the monitor normally emits small amounts of radiation and there was no danger. The terminal is home to American Airlines at the airport and was shut down during Monday morning's investigation. American Airlines spokesman Tim Smith says the package was found behind the ticket counter at a security checkpoint. ...

7 Puppies Die After American Airlines Flight

FORT WORTH, Texas (Aug. 4) -- Seven puppies died after flying in the cargo hold of an American Airlines jet. American said it contacted the shipper who put the puppies on a Tuesday morning flight from Tulsa, Okla., to Chicago, and is investigating further. Airline spokeswoman Mary Frances Fagan said Wednesday the shipper put 14 puppies aboard Flight 851, which was scheduled to leave Tulsa at 6:30 a.m. but was delayed an hour by storms in Chicago. American said on its website it won't carry warm-blooded animals if the actual or forecast temperature is above 85 degrees. As the plane sat on ...

Flight Attendant Brushes Off Praise After Helping Land Airliner

A flight attendant who stepped in for a sick co-pilot and helped land an American Airlines flight in Chicago is brushing off praise today, saying she "was just trying to be part of a team." Patti DeLuna, 61, obtained her pilot's license in 1970. It came in handy on Monday, when the first officer of a flight from San Francisco to O'Hare International was struck with serious flu symptoms. DeLuna, who has worked as a flight attendant for more than three decades, stepped up after the flight's pilot asked if any passengers were licensed to fly. "I felt terrible for the first officer," DeLuna ...

I Don't Want to Fly the Uninspected Skies

It's been a rough week for the airline industry. And an anxiety-provoking one for all those who fly. On Wednesday, the Federal Aviation Administration slapped American Eagle (owned by the parent of American Airlines) with a $2.9 million penalty for allegedly not maintaining landing gear doors on four regional jets. More than 1,100 flights were involved. A day later, the Department of Transportation jumped in with its own report. The Chicago Tribune wrote that "Federal inspectors failed to detect a troubling decline in the maintenance and upkeep of American Airlines aircraft in recent ...

Tighter Security, Terrorism Worries Could Cost Airlines Big

Tighter Security, Terrorism Worries Could Cost Airlines Big

Increased security and worries about terrorism could result in major revenue losses for U.S. airlines, even if just 1 percent of their customers decide not to fly, USA Today reports. "A 1 percent drop in demand would be equal to a revenue hit of more than $1 billion," says analyst Vaughn Cordle at AirlineForecasts. "And because airlines are so highly leveraged, nearly all of that would come off their profit bottom lines." It would only take losing as few as two or three passengers per flight to create a 1 percent drop in revenue, showing how fragile the profit-and-loss picture is for an ...
