Is Your Cell Phone's Radiation Level Safe? Don't Call the FCC

More than 200 million people in the U.S. talk on cell phones a total of at least 12 hours a month -- some double or triple that amount. Almost everyone admits that cell phones emit radiation when they link to the closest tower. What almost no one can agree on is whether that radiation is harmful to those holding their phones to their ears. Amid this confusion comes a report from health and safety activists that the government's cell phone watchdog -- the Federal Communications Commission -- is putting industry desires before public well-being. Investigators for the Environmental Working ...

Doctors Say Teens Should Be Banned From Tanning Salons

Teenagers should be barred from tanning salons to help prevent them from getting skin cancer, the American Academy of Pediatrics says. The country's largest group of pediatric doctors warned today that spending time in the tanning salon greatly increases the chances of getting melanoma, the most aggressive and deadly type of skin cancer. According to the group, melanoma is the second leading type of cancer among women in their 20s. The new policy makes the American Academy of Pediatrics the latest medical group to campaign for increased regulation of tanning salons. In 2009, the World Health ...

The Faster You Walk, the Longer You'll Live, Study Finds

Good news for speed walkers: The speed of one's stride may be correlated to that individual's longevity, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. After gathering data on more than 34,000 senior citizens who participated in nine separate studies, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh found that every 0.2 miles an hour of increased walking speed in seniors is correlated to a 12 percent rise in survival rate. "It's a real part of the human experience to see that when someone slows down with age, they may not be doing as well as they once ...

Pilot Duped AMA With Fake Claim of Being a Doctor

MILWAUKEE (Dec. 12) -- He seemed like Superman, able to guide jumbo jets through perilous skies and tiny tubes through blocked arteries. As a cardiologist and United Airlines captain, William Hamman taught doctors and pilots ways to keep hearts and planes from crashing. He shared millions in grants, had university and hospital posts, and bragged of work for prestigious medical groups. An Associated Press story featured him leading a teamwork training session at an American College of Cardiology convention last spring. But it turns out Hamman isn't a cardiologist or even a doctor. The AP ...

Teamwork Among Surgeons a Lifesaver for Patients

(Oct. 19) -- Teamwork and communication can save lives in the operating room, according to an extensive new study that found an 18 percent drop in patient deaths thanks to training programs emphasizing cooperation among medical colleagues. A team of researchers, led by experts at the Department of Veterans Affairs, studied surgical procedures at VA medical facilities across the country between 2006 and 2008. In particular, they zeroed in on the effect of the VA's Medical Team Training Program, which educates entire groups of surgical staffers -- including surgeons, nurse anesthetists and ...

Opinion: A Stem Cell Victory for Patients

(Aug. 25) -- The U.S. District Court injunction that stops federal taxpayer funding of human embryonic stem cell research should make patients happy. The judge ruled that federal funding for embryonic stem cell research violates a current law, passed annually since the Clinton administration, prohibiting government funding for research that involves the destruction of human embryos. ANOTHER VIEW Stem Cell Ruling Puts Politics Ahead of Science -- Susan L. Solomon, New York Stem Cell Foundation. He added that there is a limited amount of federal funding for stem cells, and funding embryonic ...

Hearing Loss Up 30 Percent in American Adolescents

(Aug. 17) -- Teens might be wise to listen up when parents ask them to turn down the volume. According to a new study, American adolescents are suffering significantly more hearing loss than they were 30 years ago, and one in five now have a problem. A team of researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital evaluated two nationally representative surveys, from 1988-1994 and 2005-2006, which included data on youth age 12 to 19. From 1988 to 1994, about 15 percent of youth suffered some degree of hearing loss. That spiked to 19.5 percent in the more recent survey -- a 30 percent increase. Most of ...

Physicians Group Pushes Government to Reconsider Marijuana for Medical Use

The nation's largest physicians organization is urging the federal government to reconsider marijuana as a drug with possible medical use. The American Medical Association is calling for more clinical research on marijuana, including studying ways to develop cannabis-based medicines and devise alternative ways to deliver the drug. The decision Tuesday during the group's annual meeting in Houston marks a significant shift in the AMA's policy on pot, the Los Angeles Times reported. For more than a decade the group held that marijuana should remain a Schedule I controlled substance, the most ...

Obama Hails AARP, AMA Support for House Health Bill 2 Days Before Vote

Obama Hails AARP, AMA Support for House Health Bill 2 Days Before Vote

Talk about interesting contrasts. As Rep. Michele Bachmann's "freedom-loving Americans" swarmed Capitol Hill to wield verbal pitchforks against health reform, the House bill slated for a vote Saturday evening picked up support from organizations whose members will be deeply affected by it. President Obama hailed the news as a sign of growing momentum for reform. Seniors have been among the most worried about what exactly Congress has in mind for them and for Medicare. But AARP, the leading advocacy group for people over 50, on Thursday endorsed the House bill. The nonpartisan group's CEO, ...

Corn: A Story With More Than One Kernel of Truth

Corn: A Story With More Than One Kernel of Truth

After my most recent rant -- I mean post -- on cheap food, I received a very nice response from Audrae Erickson, the president of the Corn Refiners Association, seeking to clear up any confusion about government subsidies and corn, and to allay any concerns about the sweet nature of corn sweetener. Ms. Erickson posted a short reply in the comments section of my original post, and then followed up with a more detailed reply in an e-mail. Her message reminded me that there are always (at least) two sides to a story. For instance, among the points she made is this one: "Manufacturers of corn ...
