But if that language is riddled with weird slang terms and ever-changing funny phrases, you may wind up lost in translation. That's exactly what happened to former Maryland resident Jared Romey, author of Spanish slang books "Speaking Argento," "Speaking Boricua" and the most recent "Speaking Chileno" (RIL Editores) -- guides to understanding current slang in Argentina, Puerto Rico and Chile, respectively. Back in 1997, Romey moved from the U.S. to Chile thinking he could get by solely on the years of Spanish language classes he had taken. He was ...
(Oct. 27) -- The Internet is a glorious invention, but is it really better than sex? For most Americans, the answer is still a decided "no." But there is a subset of the population, at least, that would rather give up fun between the sheets than cascading style sheets, if forced to choose between the two. Meet the true webophiles: Surprise, more of them are women than men. Actually, that shouldn't be that much of a shock, given that a greater percentage of Web users are women anyway, and that's the way it's been for at least the past five years. Furthermore, women aren't using the Web just ...
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (Oct. 5) - A blind American traveler says he was stopped from getting on a flight in Dubai on Tuesday because of his disability -- a decision the government-run airline insists was a mistake it regrets. Zuhair Mahmoud, of Arlington, Va., told The Associated Press he ran into problems when he went to check in for a 10:10 a.m. flight on FlyDubai to Amman, Jordan. He was planning a brief stay in the Jordanian capital before heading back to the United States. Farhad Berahman, AP A blind American man, Zuhair Mahmoud, says he was stopped from getting on a flight in ...
ROME, Italy (Oct. 5) -- The Italian coast guard said Monday that it had called off the search for a pair of American balloonists who disappeared last week in the Adriatic Sea. The search was called off at 3:30 p.m. (1330 GMT) after a final attempt to locate Richard Abruzzo, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Carol Rymer Davis, of Denver, had failed, said coast guard spokesman Lt. Massimo Maccheroni. Maccheroni said that a robotic vehicle scanned the seabed of the Adriatic for any remains. "We found nothing that could be traced to the balloonists," he told The Associated Press. The veteran ...
After winning the match of his life, John Isner's body just couldn't take anymore punishment. The 23rd seeded American lost his second match at Wimbeldon today to unseeded Dutch player Thiemo De Bakker in just 74 minutes and 25 games-- the shortest time for the male's division at the tournament so far. The loss was a bitter one, but not unexpected, seeing as just 21 hours earlier, Isner had finally defeated Frenchman Nicolas Mahut after 11 hours of play in the longest tennis match in history (and much longer than many other historically long endeavors). That match--which began on ...
