Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! One month after an earthquake and tsunami struck Japan, donors in the United States have contributed nearly a quarter of a billion dollars, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy. A tally of dozens of nonprofits by the philanthropic journal shows Americans have contributed more than $246.9 million to relief and recovery efforts. The American Red Cross continues to account for roughly 69 percent of the total raised. Despite these impressive-sounding totals, fundraising in the wake of the twin Japanese disasters lags behind funds raised after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti and Hurricane ...
Bad weather for a second straight day kept a ferry with several hundred Americans from being evacuated from Libya, though hopes are high that the captain will be able set sail for Malta on Friday. The Americans' presence on the vessel tied up in Tripoli's As-shahab port while Libya descends into bloody chaos is thought to be why President Barack Obama has tempered his remarks on the crisis so far. The Maria Dolores, a 204-foot tourist-type catamaran, can carry 600 passengers and was chartered by the U.S. to evacuate its citizens. It's reportedly close to capacity, although officials do not ...
Jean and Scott Adam loved to sail, but they almost shipped their yacht across the Arabian Sea to avoid a run-in with pirates, a friend said today. Scott Stolnitz, a friend of the California couple killed by pirates early today along with two other Americans off the coast of Oman, said the Adams knew the risks of sailing in the pirate-infested waters. Stolnitz, also an avid sailor, said he and Scott Adam had spoken about the dangers before their ill-fated trip. "This is all of our worst nightmares," he told the Los Angeles Times. svquest.com Scott and Jean Adam were among those ...

(Nov. 2) -- Four U.S. citizens were murdered in separate attacks in Ciudad Juarez this weekend, pushing the number of Americans killed in the Mexican border city to a record high, according to U.S. officials. U.S. State Department officials told the El Paso Times that at least 35 Americans died of unnatural causes in Juarez from Jan. 1 to Oct. 31, compared with 39 over the two previous years. Twenty of those deaths occurred in October, making it the deadliest month for Americans visiting or living in the city since 2008, when the Sinaloa and Juarez cartels started fighting over this key ...
(Sept. 23) -- A billi? That's right, a cool billion dollars was the minimum amount for securing a spot on this year's Forbes 400 list of the wealthiest Americans (which unfortunately did not include the originator of the phrase "billi," rapper Jay-Z, although he did get the coveted spot on the magazine's cover, alongside Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett). Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates -- who along with 40 other billionaires has pledged to donate a significant portion of his fortune to charity via The Giving Pledge -- topped the annual list with a net worth of $54 billion. Buffett, who ...
(Sept. 4) -- This week, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released data on prescription-drug use through 2008. According to the data, almost half of Americans -- 48.3 percent -- took at least one prescription drug per month in 2008, up from 43.5 percent a decade ago. ...
(Aug. 7) -- Six Americans, a Briton and a German all working for a Christian medical charity in Afghanistan have been ambushed and killed by militants, their group said today. Two Afghan translators were also killed with the eight foreign aid workers -- three women and five men -- whom they'd been helping. Their bodies were found riddled with bullets next to their abandoned vehicles in a mountainous area of Badakhshan province, the provincial police chief told The New York Times. The victims were a group of foreign medical personnel who'd been working at an eye care center in remote ...
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (June 24) -- A Pakistani court today convicted five U.S. men on terrorism charges in a speedy trial held behind closed doors. A single judge at an anti-terrorism court in the northeastern city of Sargodha found all five defendants guilty of criminal conspiracy and of funding banned organizations for terrorism, and sentenced them each to two prison terms of 10 and five years, to be served concurrently. They were acquitted of three other charges, including planning to wage war on the U.S. and Afghanistan. Details were reported by several news agencies. The men have been ...
(June 9) -- A NATO helicopter was shot down in southern Afghanistan today, killing four American troops near an area where U.S. military commanders and their allies are reportedly softening plans for an upcoming offensive, beefing up aid outreach instead of military might. The helicopter was brought down by hostile fire in Helmand province, NATO said. It didn't release the names or nationalities of the troops killed, but The Associated Press reported that those killed were Americans. Both U.S. and British troops operate in Helmand. A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the attack, ...
