Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! The Academy Awards shone bright lights in my family's night sky well before 2007, when I stood in a Santa Monica street hugging my black-gowned and borrowed-diamonds daughter Rachel and not crying, I did not cry, I did not! as she climbed into the black limo that whisked her and her co-director/producer Heidi to the Oscars where they would lose Best Documentary to Al Gore. And why yes: it is way cool just to be nominated. The Academy Awards had me long before that night. Way back in America's black & white Cold War daze, my father managed movie theaters on our home turf of Montana prairie ...
(Nov. 28) -- It's easy and sometimes even fun to pick on Al Gore. But at some point -- and that point was surely reached during Gore's Lock Box days -- the jokes exhausted themselves, though of course Rush Limbaugh still snickers at them. What we're left with these days, if we're tired of Pavement-era bon mots, is Al Gore's ideas, and because he's a politician, the effect those ideas have had on the populace. The director of "Waiting for Superman," Davis Guggenheim, has a way of making friends who happen to know their way around the White House. In his 2007 breakout documentary and Oscar winner, "An Inconvenient Truth" (starring former Vice President Al Gore), Guggenheim's excellent creative bloodlines were shown to great advantage as he essentially brought a Power Point presentation to life. (He is the son of four-time Academy Award winner Charles Guggenheim and is married to movie star and Academy Award nominee Elisabeth Shue). His new film was released last month and despite harsh criticism of ...
The new documentary, "Waiting for Superman," is the work of Davis Guggenheim, who also directed "An Inconvenient Truth." But his new movie, on the subject of school reform, takes on the teacher's union so pointedly that he practically cues the music from "Jaws" every time the union is mentioned -- and makes it look like the only obstacle to public school excellence is the ability to fire teachers with impunity. Davis isn't alone in this view, either; on the contrary, it's become the new conventional wisdom among liberals. When did we put the American Federation of Teachers on par with Al ...
To make political documentaries these days calls to mind the final line of "The Great Gatsby": "So we beat on, boats against the current . . . " For every Michael Moore or "Inconvenient Truth," there are hundreds of directors we've never heard of, hundreds of films that don't find an audience, and many more that don't find the money to get made. But the allure of this type of filmmaking, with its potential to alter national debate, policies and laws, is enduring. The proof is on display this week at the Washington, D.C.-area Silverdocs festival, which is showcasing nearly 100 new ...
Al Gore told The British newspaper The Sun that he plans to make a sequel to An Inconvenient Truth. Despite the fact that most people view the climate crisis as a very serious issue, Gore believes that little has actually changed since his 2006 hit documentary helped move global climate change to the forefront of international politics. He cited a recent study that showed the problem ranked near the bottom of a long list of people's concerns. "I remember one poll," Gore said, "where it came under dog litter. People are more likely to respond to problems that can be felt – terrorism, ...
