Angelina Jolie Visits Libya-Tunisia Border [VIDEO]

TUNIS, Tunisia -- Refugees who fled violence in Libya have welcomed an unusual visitor to their border camp in Tunisia: Angelina Jolie. The American actress visited on Tuesday in her role as a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees. The UNHCR said in a statement that Jolie urged more international aid for the refugees, and the Jolie-Pitt Foundation had also made an "important donation" for the refugee operation. Jolie also praised the government of Tunisia for its generosity toward the refugees. Tunisia saw an uprising in January that overthrew a dictator ...

Jack Black Helps Name Atlanta Zoo's Panda Cub

ATLANTA -- Jack Black joined Zoo Atlanta for a naming ceremony for a 3-month-old giant panda cub, the only one of the endangered species born in a U.S. zoo last year. The zoo today named the cub Po after the main character voiced by Black in his upcoming animated sequel "Kung Fu Panda 2." Zoo officials say that in return for the name, studio Dreamworks donated money to the zoo to help with its panda conservation program. The zoo declined to say how much. The zoo pays China a $500,000-per-year lease to display the pandas. Black posed for pictures with the 10-pound cub, which made squawking ...

Bosnian Rape Victims Protest Angelina Jolie Movie

Bosnian Rape Victims Protest Angelina Jolie Movie

(Nov. 30) -- Bosnian rape victims from the 1990s want Angelina Jolie stripped of her title as a "goodwill ambassador" for the United Nations because of rumors that a new film she's directing tells the story of a Muslim woman who falls in love with her Serbian rapist. A group called Women Victims of War, which represents victims of sexual violence in the Balkans, sent a letter Monday to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), a U.N. refugee agency Jolie has traveled with on aid missions to Kosovo, Pakistan, Darfur and several other hot spots. The association ...

Angelina Jolie Defends Her Bosnian Movie Plans

Angelina Jolie Defends Her Bosnian Movie Plans

(Oct. 15) -- Angelina Jolie said today that she hopes to meet with rape victims in Bosnia after an uproar about the plot of her upcoming film led Sarajevo officials to cancel her permit to film there. The controversy about Jolie's movie, her first as writer-director, stemmed from reports, apparently false, that it was a love story that involved a Bosnian woman falling in love with her Serbian rapist. The rumors stem from a furor in July, when a proposed production deal between Jolie and Serbian media tycoon Zeljko Mitrovic, once a close ally of the widow of Serbian strongman Slobodan ...

Which Celebrity Would You Vote For?

Which Celebrity Would You Vote For?

(Oct. 12) -- George Clooney and Angelina Jolie already have faces that could have been chiseled by Michelangelo, so why not just carve those two directly into Mount Rushmore? The two left-leaning activist celebrities were among those most frequently mentioned when AOL News asked a random sampling of New Yorkers, "What celebrity would you chose to lead the country?" Indeed, some people took the question quite seriously, pointing to Jolie's charitable efforts as a U.N. goodwill ambassador. Of course, many others thought the question was all in good fun. One woman said she'd cast her vote ...

Oakland Goes Hollywood With Brad Pitt's 'Moneyball' Production

OAKLAND, Calif. -- There has been a buzz around the Coliseum this week that has nothing to do with Trevor Cahill or Kurt Suzuki or Andrew Bailey. It's about guys like Scott Hatteberg, Miguel Tejada and -- who are we kidding? -- Brad Pitt. For the past week, Hollywood has taken over the Coliseum, where they've been shooting the long-awaited film "Moneyball," based on the book that chronicled Billy Beane's innovative methods of building the 2002 A's. Pitt, who is playing Beane, has already left quite an impression on the A's employees who have spent a little time with him. "Is he a good me?" ...

Angelina Jolie in 'Salt' Proves Girls Can Take a Hit (and Throw a Punch)

Angelina Jolie in 'Salt' Proves Girls Can Take a Hit (and Throw a Punch)

The opening scene of "Salt," the post-Cold War spy thriller starring Angelina Jolie, makes you wince. A woman. Naked but for a flimsy pair of cotton panties and bra. Blood. Obvious torture. Rape is implied. In those first flashes I almost walked out (or at least checked out), so uncomfortable was I with the idea of a skinny defenseless girl in panties being exploited in such a way. Silly me. "I'm not a spy, I'm a businesswoman," croaks Evelyn Salt right before getting waterboarded by a pack of men in official uniforms. Her own man eventually saves her, of course, riding in like a white ...

Lisbeth Salander, the Girl Who Rocked the Mystery-Action Genre

We are all a little in love with her. In this season of heat and sweat and languor, there's no escaping Lisbeth Salander. She is, of course, the enigmatic action hero of the sensational Millennium Trilogy -- "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," "The Girl Who Played With Fire," The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest''-- the trio of dazzling mystery novels by the Swedish journalist Stieg Larsson, who died of a heart attack at the age of 50 in 2004, before his manuscripts were published and he could witness the worldwide phenomenon his books became in just a few years. Lisbeth Salander, 25, frail, ...
