China Dogs' Rescue Shows Growing Animal Activism

BEIJING -- After spotting a truck packed with hundreds of whimpering dogs on a Beijing highway, a man put out a call on a microblogging site, begging fellow animal lovers to help him force the driver to release the animals. Around 200 people responded, blockading the truck at a toll booth for 15 hours until they finally negotiated the dogs' release for $17,000, saving them from being slaughtered and served as food. Many of the animals were dehydrated, injured and suffering from a potentially deadly virus; at least 68 have been hospitalized. Video footage taken at the site and provided to The ...

Netherlands Considers Banning Religious Animal Slaughter

AMSTERDAM -- One of Europe's first countries to allow Jews to practice their religion openly may soon pass a law banning centuries-old Jewish and Muslim traditions on the ritual slaughter of animals. In the Netherlands, an unlikely alliance of an animal rights party and the xenophobic Freedom Party is spearheading support for the ban on kosher and halal slaughter methods that critics say inflict unacceptable suffering on animals. Peter Dejong, AP The Netherlands is considering a law that would affect how Halal butcher stores, like this one in Amsterdam, slaughter animals for ...

Activists: Hundreds of Animals Dying at Kiev Zoo

The Kiev Zoo was once a source of pride for Ukraine's capital city, but activists are now crying foul against what hardly seems like an animal sanctuary. Animal rights groups say that possibly hundreds of animals have died at the Kiev Zoo in recent years as a result of poor living conditions, malnutrition and inadequate medical care, The Associated Press reports. UNIAN / AP Boy, a 39-year-old Indian elephant, lies in his pen covered with a cloth after collapsing and dying at the Kiev Zoo in April. Animal welfare groups say dozens if not hundreds of animals have died ...

The new series, "Taking on Tyson," which debuted Sunday on Animal Planet, follows Iron Mike around as he immerses himself in the world of pigeon racing. But PETA members think the series is a birdbrained idea and protested Monday outside of his Las Vegas home. Mel Evans, AP The animal rights group PETA is protesting former boxing great Mike Tyson because they believe his new hobby, pigeon racing, is cruel. The group has ...

Hundreds Seek to Adopt Puppy That Survived Euthanasia [VIDEO]

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Hundreds of people from the United States and Canada want to adopt an Oklahoma dog that survived an attempt to euthanize it. The puppy was one of five stray dogs that Sulphur animal control officer Scott Prall put to sleep Friday -- or so he thought. Prall found one of the dogs alive Saturday in a trash bin set aside for dead animals and took it to veterinarian technician Amanda Kloski. "He was prancing around. He heard me drive up, and he looked up and saw me," Prall said Wednesday. He said he initially found the stray dog near the animal shelter Friday and tried to kill ...

Bob Barker Helps 25 Bolivian Lions Find a US Home

DENVER -- Twenty-five lions, most of them rescued from Bolivian circuses, arrived in Colorado on Wednesday to start their new lives at a wildlife sanctuary. The 14 males and 11 females landed at Denver International Airport around 4:30 p.m. The jetliner pulled into a maintenance hangar and police officers armed with assault rifles stood by as a precaution. The animals were rescued from deplorable conditions after a law was passed last year in Bolivia prohibiting all performances involving animals, Animal Defenders International said. Most of the lions were dehydrated and suffered ...

Giant Pigs Displayed in Taiwan's Pig of God Festival

Revelers in Taiwan paraded the bodies of giant pigs through the streets of New Taipei City during a controversial celebration called the Pig of God festival. Farmers spent years fattening up more than 60 pigs with special feeds and other treatments before bringing them to the annual heaviest pig contest on Feb. 8, which marks the Chinese Lunar New Year. The obese pigs are slaughtered and painted before being put on floats outside a Taoist temple. Animal rights activists have long opposed the Pig of God festival, arguing that the government shouldn't allow the public slaughter of the pigs -- ...

Russia's Parasailing Donkey Dies of Heart Attack

The Russian donkey who sparked worldwide outrage when she was forced to parasail over a beach has died of a heart attack. Anapka became an international YouTube sensation in July when beachgoers filmed the donkey screaming in fear as she was dragged above the Sea of Azov by a motorboat as part of a publicity stunt for a local tourism company. The 40-year-old donkey survived the parasail but succumbed to heart trouble in late December, apparently from stress related to her terrifying flight. "She got sick in December. She became very weak," Yulia Dobrovolskaya told the New York Daily ...
