China Dogs' Rescue Shows Growing Animal Activism

BEIJING -- After spotting a truck packed with hundreds of whimpering dogs on a Beijing highway, a man put out a call on a microblogging site, begging fellow animal lovers to help him force the driver to release the animals. Around 200 people responded, blockading the truck at a toll booth for 15 hours until they finally negotiated the dogs' release for $17,000, saving them from being slaughtered and served as food. Many of the animals were dehydrated, injured and suffering from a potentially deadly virus; at least 68 have been hospitalized. Video footage taken at the site and provided to The ...

To the Hounds: Fox Hunting Lives On as an Animal-Friendly Pastime

GORMAN, Calif. -- It's a pastime, participants will tell you, that's as American as apple pie: one played in the great outdoors, on real grass, with lots of running and jumping and zig zagging all over the place. And, no, it's not football or baseball, although a horsehide is tangentially involved. David McNew, AP Huntsman Scott Neill and foxhounds return from a British-style fox hunt for coyotes March 26 on Tejon Ranch near Gorman, Calif. We're talking fox hunting here, a sport so American it has been pursued by presidents, Hollywood celebrities and just plain folks from all ...

'Euthanized' Puppy Gets New Leash on Life

A puppy that was declared dead along with the rest of his euthanized litter mates turned out to be very much alive -- and now he's looking for a home. Wall-E was one of six puppies found in a cage that was dumped outside the animal shelter in Sulphur, Okla., about a week ago. The dogs appeared to be very sick. Rather than bring them into the shelter, where other animals could have been exposed to their illness, officials decided the puppies would have to be put to sleep, according to KWTV, Channel 9 in Oklahoma City. A veterinarian euthanized the puppies and declared each one dead. The ...

Prince Harry Accused of Animal Cruelty

BRADFORD, United Kingdom (Sept. 5) – Animal welfare groups are accusing Britain's Prince Harry of animal cruelty after he continued to play in a polo game after his horse was allegedly wounded by spikes on the royal's riding spurs. Family Pets Also Victimized by Foreclosure Crisis

(July 18) -- Abandoned pets may be one of the less-visible ramifications of the festering foreclosure crisis. Shelters in some of the nation's worst-hit regions report a surge in animals that have either been left behind by their owners or dropped off at shelters in hopes that new owners can be found. Pet rescuers in some of the hard-hit areas of the country report they have been flooded with calls for help by pet owners no longer able to afford their animals. Statistics are difficult to obtain, but the Humane Society of the United States says it has noticed a huge increase over the past ...

San Francisco's War on Pets

(July 12) -- San Francisco is close to becoming the least-welcoming city in the country for pets. San Francisco's Commission of Animal Control and Welfare plans to vote on an ordinance that would ban the sale of all pets, except fish. "That includes dogs, cats, hamsters, mice, rats, chinchillas, guinea pigs, birds, snakes, lizards and nearly every other critter, or, as the commission calls them, companion animals," reports the San Francisco Chronicle. While reports of an excess of abandoned cats and dogs first got the commission to investigate the issue, the real problem turns out to be ...
