The critics aren't so sure. Some reviewers slammed "Anna Nicole" -- which opened Thursday night at London's Royal Opera House -- as a "perversely unmoving" "failed souffle." Others, however, have praised it as a "provocative" and "deeply moving" examination of modern celebrity culture. The opera, by composer Mark-Anthony Turnage and librettist Richard Thomas, charts the rapid rise to fame and fortune -- acquired by posing for Playboy and ...
LOS ANGELES - A judge Thursday dismissed the drug conspiracy convictions of the late Anna Nicole Smith's boyfriend-lawyer Howard K. Stern and her psychiatrist, allowing only one conviction to remain against the physician while reducing it to a misdemeanor. Superior Court Judge Robert Perry found that Stern never had the intent to defraud when he used his name and others to protect Smith's privacy when he obtained prescriptions for her. Perry also found that psychiatrist Khristine Eroshevich was acting out of concern for Smith and cited her long career and service to the community in deciding ...
(Oct. 28) -- The doctor and boyfriend of Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith were found guilty of conspiring to provide the starlet with drugs during the three years preceding her death of an overdose in 2007. Boyfriend Howard K. Stern and psychiatrist Khristine Eroshevich face an uncertain future following convictions that they kept Smith doped up on drugs in order to stay in her inner circle and exert control as alleged by prosecutors. A judge said earlier that he was reserving the option of changing the verdict if he didn't like it. ...
LAS VEGAS (June 25) -- The King of Pop is dead. Long live the King of Pop's ridiculously valuable stuff. On the first anniversary of Michael Jackson's death, a bidder ponied up $192,000 today for one of the deceased star's iconic rhinestone-encrusted white gloves, one of several exorbitant winning bids for Jackson memorabilia. The glove was one of five donned by the singer during his 1984 Victory Tour. The identity of the winning bidder for the glove was not immediately known, but the price did fall short of the $350,000 spent on another of Jackson's gloves by a Chinese casino mogul in ...
(June 10) -- Photos like the deathbed image of Gary Coleman that Globe magazine printed on its front page are awful to look at, but do they also tell us a lot about that celebrity ... and our twisted culture? Depends on who you ask -- and which celebrity is pictured. Burt Kearns, the former managing editor of "Hard Copy" and "A Current Affair," is the first to admit that deathbed and after-death photos like the ones showing John Lennon at the morgue, Elvis Presley at his funeral or paramedics trying to revive Michael Jackson are "distasteful" and "invasive." globemagazine.com Globe ...
SAN FRANCISCO (March 19) - A federal appeals court ruled Friday that Anna Nicole Smith's estate will get none of the more than $300 million the late Playboy model claimed a Texas billionaire to whom she was briefly married meant to leave her after he died. The ruling came in a 15-year legal battle that started in a sleepy Houston probate court and stretched all the way to the U.S Supreme Court. It initially pitted Smith against the son of J. Howard Marshall over the $1.6 billion estate the oil tycoon left after his 1995 death at age 90. J. Howard Marshall had wed Smith the year before when ...
From beyond the grave, Anna Nicole Smith is continuing to fight for money from her brief marriage to an 89-year-old Texan billionaire oilman, J. Howard Marshall. The Playboy model, reality show star and celebrity train wreck who died of a drug overdose in 2007 and her lawyer Howard K. Stern have spent 15 years on a judicial system odyssey that may have its last performance this Thursday before a federal appellate court in Seattle. ...
