Charlie Sheen, Julian Assange and John Galliano: Who's Really Anti-Semitic?

When did anti-Semitism become fashionable again? In the past week, we've seen three prominent individuals from different fields make remarks that either could be interpreted as or definitely were anti-Semitic. Julian Assange The WikiLeaks mastermind ranted about how "Jewish" reporters are out to get him, the British magazine Private Eye reported. After Private Eye published an article about the anti-Semitism of someone else associated with WikiLeaks, Assange called the magazine's editor. He then complained that reporters from the U.K. newspaper the Guardian were conspiring against him and ...

'Blood Libel': 5 Reactions to Sarah Palin's Choice of Words

Where Sarah Palin goes, strong opinions tend to follow. As such, it's hardly surprising that the former vice presidential candidate's release today of a video message about Saturday's shooting in Arizona has been met with a wide and varied response, largely focused on her use of the term "blood libel." While that term normally refers to the false accusations that Jews (and sometimes other religious minorities) murder children to use their blood in religious rituals, Palin used it to describe the public comments linking her and other high-profile right-wing figures to the actions of accused ...

Anti-Israel Bus Ads in Seattle Cause International Stir

If you live in Seattle, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict may be coming soon to a commuter bus near you. A group called the Seattle Mideast Awareness Campaign has paid King County about $2,760 to rent ad space on the sides of 12 city buses. The ad shows a Palestinian family standing next to a demolished house in Gaza, with the words "Israeli war crimes: Your tax dollars at work." It also lists a website that encourages supporters to write to Congress and ask lawmakers to revoke U.S. military aid to Israel. It's the latest in a series of controversies over ads that involve religion. Last week, ...

Roger Ailes Apologizes to ADL, but Not to NPR for 'Nazi' Comments

(Nov. 19) -- Did I say Nazi? I meant nasty, inflexible bigot. Fox News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes may have apologized for calling NPR executives a bunch of "Nazis" during an interview with the Daily Beast's Howard Kurtz, but he certainly isn't backing down. In a letter to the Anti-Defamation League, Ailes said that he "was of course ad-libbing and should not have chosen that word," adding that he "was angry at the time because of NPR's willingness to censor Juan Williams for not being liberal enough." Ailes also qualified the Nazi statement, saying that in his "now considered opinion, ...

Beck Slammed for 'Horrific' Holocaust Remarks

(Nov. 12) -- Jewish leaders have condemned Glenn Beck for comments he made on Fox News accusing billionaire philanthropist George Soros -- a Jew -- of being complicit with the Holocaust as a child in Nazi-occupied Hungary. On three TV programs this past week, the conservative commentator has focused on Soros, a Hungarian-born financier and democracy advocate, calling him a "puppet master" who is "notorious for collapsing economies and regimes all around the world." Soros' pro-democracy Open Society Institute played a role in the collapse of communist regimes in Hungary and Georgia, and has ...

Rabbis Rally in Support of Ground Zero Mosque

NEW YORK (Aug. 5) -- Rabbis rallied near the World Trade Center site today in support of a planned Islamic center known as the ground zero mosque. About 20 religious leaders and activists gathered on the street in lower Manhattan today where the mosque is to be built. They said the Cordoba Initiative, the group sponsoring the cultural center, was welcome in New York. "We need this Islamic center to preach love and respect in contrast to those who preach hate and destruction," Rabbi Richard Jacobs of the Westchester Reform Temple in Scarsdale, N.Y., told reporters. The rabbis said ...

Mayor Bloomberg's Ground Zero Mosque Speech [VIDEO]

(Aug. 3) -- Delivering an impassioned, emotional speech Tuesday, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg expressed his view that a proposed Islamic community center and mosque just blocks from ground zero should be built. Earlier in the day, New York's Landmarks Preservation Commission voted unanimously to deny landmark status to protect the lot where the 11-story Islamic center is slated to rise, clearing an obstacle for its construction. Several Republican politicians -- from Sarah Palin to Newt Gingrich -- as well as the Anti-Defamation League have come out against the project. But Bloomberg ...

Ground Zero Mosque Clears Another Hurdle in New York

NEW YORK -- After months of intense debate here and across the nation, the city today opened the way for the construction of a mosque and Islamic center two blocks from Ground Zero, site of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. The decision by the city Landmarks and Preservation Commission, which had been expected, allows for the transformation of a 152-year-old building into the proposed center just north of Ground Zero. The vote was 9-0 against granting landmark status to the building, which freed Islamic center organizers to tear it down and built the center on that site. ...

Ground Zero Mosque Is Dealt a Setback in New York

Ground Zero Mosque Is Dealt a Setback in New York

NEW YORK -- In a reversal, an influential Jewish organization announced its opposition to a proposed mosque and Islamic center near Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan. The surprising decision by the Anti-Defamation League , reported by the New York Times Saturday, is likely to inflame a months-long dispute that's become a national debate on freedom of religion and the impact of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. The turn-around by the ADL, a mainstream group that had earlier denounced attacks on the proposed mosque as bigoted, may change the course of the battle over the planned ...

Experts Fear Suicide Crash Could Inspire More Attacks

(Feb. 19) -- To most Americans, Joe Stack's decision to crash a plane into an IRS office in Austin, Texas, Thursday morning was a mix of desperation and lunacy. But another portion of the nation greeted Stack's murderous act as a romantic and patriotic gesture -- a reaction that concerns experts. "The very fact of what he did might energize somebody else on the borderline and might tip them in favor of going ahead and doing something similar," said Mark Pitcavage, who tracks anti-government groups as director of investigative research for the Anti-Defamation League. "The fact that there is ...
