NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg Wants Ban on Food Stamp Use for Soft Drinks

In New York they call it "soda," not pop, not a soft drink. Call it what you like, if Mayor Michael Bloomberg gets his way, NYC residents won't be able to use food stamps to buy many of their favorite carbonated beverages or other sugary drinks. The request, made Wednesday to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, would apply to 1.7 million food stamp recipients in the city's five boroughs for an experimental two-year period. It's part of a nutrition push by the mayor that also includes advertisements, rules for food sold in schools and a failed bid to get a state tax on sugared drinks, the New ...

Michelle Obama and Her Exercise Surprise for Me

First Lady Michelle Obama added a little surprise on Tuesday to a White House South Lawn event with 84 kids from Washington schools designed to encourage them to get lots of exercise this summer. On Tuesday, Mrs. Obama urged the nation's food makers to produce and market healthier products, ramping up her rhetoric in her anti-childhood obesity campaign in a speech before the Grocery Manufacturers Association. And on Wednesday, Mrs. Obama -- an admitted lover of an occasional hamburger and fries -- ...

Obama Chows Down: 'Don't Tell Michelle'

While First Lady Michelle Obama spends Wednesday in Mississippi, a stop in her anti-obesity drive, it's worth noting that President Obama busted himself Tuesday when he filled a plate with southern cooking at a restaurant in Savannah, Ga. Obama quipped to the press: "I don't want any lectures about my cholesterol. Don't tell Michelle." Obama had a physical on Sunday and his doctor, Capt. Jeffrey Kuhlman, the chief White House physician, told him to watch what he eats to lower his LDL, the so-called "bad" cholesterol. In Savannah, Obama dined at Mrs. Wilkes' Boarding House restaurant with ...
