So when the man who raped her when she was a college freshman at the University of Virginia wrote her a letter of apology nearly 20 years later, Seccuro heard him out. And then, she pressed charges. "Forgiveness is a journey you must take," Seccuro, 43, said in an interview on NBC's "Today" show. But, she said, "that's different than our criminal justice system." The business owner, wife and mother of two from Washington, D.C., has written a memoir about her decades-long struggle for justice and closure, and is speaking out today, ...
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has apologized for remarks he made to an Irish-American group stereotyping drunken celebrations on St. Patrick's Day. The mayor, addressing the American Irish Historical Society on Wednesday, quipped that he lives nearby the society offices and is used to seeing inebriated people spilling out of the Manhattan building on St. Patrick's Day. "Normally when I walk by this building there are a bunch of people that are totally inebriated hanging out the window waving," Bloomberg said. "I know, that's a stereotype of the Irish," he went on, as members of the ...
Jerry Richardson, the Carolina Panthers' owner, apologized this week to the fans most responsible for building the franchise, the permanent seat license owners. In the midst of a 1-11 season, he said in a letter that the Panthers would continue with a master plan of building with the draft, among other things. John Fox, the coach, was the last to hear about it. Asked what he thought about the letter Richardson sent to PSL owners, which were the owners' first public comments on the poor season, Fox said, "I have no idea what you're talking about." Fox has not been kept up to date probably ...
(Nov. 19) -- Did I say Nazi? I meant nasty, inflexible bigot. Fox News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes may have apologized for calling NPR executives a bunch of "Nazis" during an interview with the Daily Beast's Howard Kurtz, but he certainly isn't backing down. In a letter to the Anti-Defamation League, Ailes said that he "was of course ad-libbing and should not have chosen that word," adding that he "was angry at the time because of NPR's willingness to censor Juan Williams for not being liberal enough." Ailes also qualified the Nazi statement, saying that in his "now considered opinion, ...

Partygoers said they were outraged by two men -- one dressed as a white-robed Ku Klux Klan member, the other wearing blackface and being led around by a noose. Nonetheless, the pair won first prize in the party's costume competition. "I sincerely regret the incident,'' legion President Patricia Varga said Wednesday, the Montreal Gazette reported. "I also want the citizens of Canada and ...
Nearly two decades after their "she said, he said" public battle, Anita Hill and Justice Clarence Thomas are back in the news. The reason? Thomas' wife, Virginia "Ginni" Thomas, left a voice mail message seeking an apology from Hill, who accused her husband of sexual harassment during his Supreme Court confirmation hearings in 1991. The bizarre incident has sparked speculation as to why Ginni Thomas decided to contact Hill after all these years. Appearing on MSNBC's "Jansing & Company" Wednesday morning, Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post journalist Eugene Robinson said, "One gets the ...
(Oct. 6) -- That wasn't so hard, was it? On Wednesday, former CNN anchor Rick Sanchez issued a formal apology to Comedy Central's Jon Stewart for calling "The Daily Show" host a bigot and implying that Jews control the media. "On October 4th, I had a very good conversation with Jon Stewart," Sanchez's statement began, "and I had the opportunity to apologize for my inartful comments from last week. I sincerely extend this apology to anyone else whom I may have offended." Sanchez, however, is by no means the first news personality to offer the fake newsman such a gesture. Surge Desk travels ...

(Aug. 6) -- The head of Target Corp. apologized Thursday over a political donation to a business group backing a conservative Republican for Minnesota governor, which angered some employees and sparked talk of a customer boycott. Target CEO Gregg Steinhafel wrote employees to say the discount retailer was "genuinely sorry" over the way a $150,000 contribution to MN Forward donation played out. Steinhafel said Target would set up a review process for future political donations. MN Forward is running TV ads supporting Republican Tom Emmer, an outspoken conservative opposed to ...

Etheridge North Carolina Democrat Bob Etheridge started the week by apologizing for roughing up a mysterious guy who approached him on a Washington street. A video of the incident -- shot by two ...
LONDON (June 15) -- The British government today published a long-awaited damning report on the 1972 Bloody Sunday massacre in Northern Ireland, blaming British soldiers for the "unjustified and unjustifiable" killing of 14 "innocent" civilians. The report is the conclusion of a 12-year-long inquiry headed by British High Court judge Lord Saville, who was charged with finding out how a civil rights march in the city of Londonderry on Jan. 30, 1972, turned into a bloodbath. That day -- soon to be known as Bloody Sunday -- saw 13 demonstrators killed after paratroopers opened fire on a crowd ...
