Apple Sells 500,000 iPad 2 Units in Big Opening Weekend

Is anybody surprised that the iPad 2 sold like hotcakes this weekend? Not really. Apple has yet to release official numbers, but analysts report that the company sold roughly 500,000 units of the sleek new tablet computer during its first days on the market. Not bad, considering that 300,000 iPads were sold over the original device's opening weekend. Now that the dust has settled on the iPad 2's debut, Surge Desk scans the Web for some initial thoughts: GigaOM's Darrell Etherington wasn't holding his breath over iPad 2 sales: "It's no surprise that Apple's initial iPad 2 shipment sold ...

Pentalobe Screwdriver: See Apple's New Low-Tech Tool in Action [VIDEO]

Apple Computer may not have re-invented the wheel, but when it comes to screwdrivers, they're thinking different. After moving quite a few units of the new iPhone 4, Apple customers started noticing that the screws that hold the latest version of the smartphone together are not the ordinary Phillips head variety. Meet the tamper-proof, pentalobe screw. As the name suggests, pentalobe screws consist of five rounded (lobe-like, in other words) grooves that form the shape of a tiny flower when looked at from above. Attempts to open up an iPhone 4 with a flat-head or Phillips-head screwdriver wi...

The company introduced its much anticipated Xoom tablet computer Wednesday to an eager audience at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The tablet, which thus far has been very well received, will run on Honeycomb (not the breakfast cereal), Google's latest version of the Android operating system. The Verizon-based computer also features 1280 x 800 resolution on a 10.1-inch monitor, 5 megapixel camera and 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor. Opinion: The 10 Worst Predictions for 2010

If 2010 taught us anything, it's that few people are able to accurately predict even the simplest events in the near-term future, let alone the big ones. From the price of gold, to unemployment, to Google Wave, prognosticators got more than a few major items wrong in their predictions lists. Here, in no particular order, are "10 for 10" -- 10 of the worst predictions of 2010. Paul Sancya, AP Newsweek, in its "Business Predictions for 2010," said unemployment would drop below 9 percent this year. Job growth will return "Unemployment Drops Below 9 Percent," Newsweek "business pred...

IPad 2 to Drop in February? Opinions Vary on What the New Tablet Might Include

(Dec. 7) -- Start up the Apple rumor mill! According to a report from Digitimes, the iPad 2 could be coming to stores as early as February. The tech blog seems to have a report from the Chinese electronics manufacturer Foxconn saying that they will be shipping a new version of the tablet computer in just two months, but the manufacturer declined to comment. Never one to wait around to update its electronics, Apple has yet to make any kind of formal announcement, but, if true, the presumed February release of the iPad 2 does break from a regular schedule of updating products before the holida...

Is Apple's iPad Hurting PC Sales?

Is Apple's iPad Hurting PC Sales?

(Oct. 5) -- Contrary to earlier rumors of the doom-and-gloom sort, the good old-fashioned PC can consider itself safe from the iPad, at least for the time being. Only 13 percent of iPad owners surveyed sacrificed purchasing a PC in favor of the tablet gadget, according to an NPD research report. E-readers may want to watch their backs though -- 24 percent of iPad owners chose the more versatile Apple tablet as an alternative to e-reader technologies such as the Amazon Kindle. The study also showed that iPad owners are a tech-savvy bunch -- individuals who purchased the iPad within its first t...

Apple iPad Tops DVD Players for Fastest Ever Technology Adoption Rate

(Oct. 5) -- The iPad is leaving the DVD and other technologies in a huge pile of e-waste. According to a recent study by Bernstein Research, Apple's signature tablet computer has quickly become the most rapidly adopted non-telephone technology ever, surpassing the previous record-holder, the DVD player, in terms of number of product units sold: a rate of 4.5 million per quarter for the iPad, compared to 350,000 DVD players in its first year of release. Even more staggering: the fact that 3 million of those 4.5 million units iPad units were sold during the product's first 80 days. Sufficed t...
