Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! It's not much, but it's something. Americans' approval of the job Congress is doing has rebounded somewhat after hitting a record low, with new poll numbers just rising out of the teens, according to a survey out Tuesday. The Gallup poll conducted Jan. 7-9 found 20 percent of voters have a positive opinion of Congress' performance. That's up from a rock-bottom 13 percent approval in mid-December. Support for Congress had been hovering around 20 percent from May of last year through October, Gallup said. Along party lines, 22 percent of Republicans gave their approval to Congress, the ...
President Barack Obama got more than rest and relaxation while he was on vacation in Hawaii over the holidays: His job approval rating, which had been languishing in the mid-40-percent range for more than six months, rose to 50 percent, according to Gallup Daily tracking. The results are the average from tracking conducted Dec. 28-29 and Jan. 2, Gallup said. Obama's rise in ratings comes after a particularly busy lame-duck session of Congress, which the president termed "a season of progress." Compromise was reached on extending the Bush-era tax cuts, Congress repealed the ban on gays ...
(Oct. 26) -- The erosion of President Barack Obama's popularity has lessons in it for every American who wishes to remain interesting and current, both professionally and personally. The real story in this election is not that America has no jobs, that the economy continues to falter or that the national debt continues to balloon. While all three are true and, more importantly, Obama has failed to fix them, it is also true that these conditions existed prior to Obama's election. Yet somehow his personal charisma and captivating charm elevated the electorate. The real story of campaign 2010 ...
(Aug. 11) -- According to a new poll released Tuesday by The Wall Street Journal, President Barack Obama is largely meeting the public's expectations. But how does that finding square with other polls that have tracked his sinking approval numbers? The Wall Street Journal poll found that 58 percent of those surveyed said Obama had "done just about what they expected," while 29 percent said he had done worse, and 12 percent said he had done better than they expected. An aggregate index of Obama's job approval rating, however, finds that the president's support has steadily dwindled over his ...
(Dec. 25) -- The latest roundup of President Obama's job approval or favorability ratings by state updates or adds Alabama, California, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Virginia and Washington state. ...
In an article in Friday's Wall Street Journal, Democratic pollster Douglas E. Schoen and independent pollster Scott Rasmussen analyze President Barack Obama's recent polling numbers and conclude that the new Administration is quickly polarizing America. The surprising results show that President Obama's net approval rating is actually lower than President George W. Bush's at the same point in his presidency.Polling data show that Mr. Obama's approval rating is dropping and is below where George W. Bush was in an analogous period in 2001. Rasmussen Reports data shows that Mr. Obama's net ...
Congress is riding a sudden wave of good vibrations. Buoyed by Democratic voters, the approval rating for our nation's lawmakers has jumped 20 percentage points over the past two months, to a four-year high of 39%. Though that figure is not especially stellar, it marks quite a turnaround from the historic lows of 2008, when Congressional approval was something of an oxymoron. Democrats are giving a much higher thumbs-up (57% approve) to the Hill than are Republicans (22%), and Independents (34%) are, as is their wont, pretty much in the middle. Though there is a widening gap between the way ...
Politico has an analysis of a May 29 Pew study that suggests that white women, as Politico puts it, are "Cool to Obama." From Politico: Barack Obama's favorability ratings among white women has declined significantly in recent months, particularly among Democrats and independents, presenting an immediate obstacle for the likely Democratic nominee as he moves to shore up his party's base. A closer look at the study, along with some other factors, may quiet the alarm bells somewhat. However, there is a good possibility that, for Barack Obama to get more female voters, perhaps he needs to "get" ...
The conundrum for McCain: George W. Bush can still draw rich Republicans willing to open their wallets in exchange for a photo with a sitting president. Unfortunately that president is wildly unpopular with the public, so no candidate wants to get too close to him. One GOP congressman went as far as to say Bush is "absolutely radioactive."That sort of thinking has led the McCain campaign to scale back upcoming events featuring Bush. The president was to attend fundraisers in Arizona and Utah, both of which had been open to the public and press. Now the events have been moved indoors to the ...
By now, you've heard the news: President George W. Bush is the least favorite of all modern presidents including Truman, Nixon and the evil Chester Arthur. Plus, he can't shoot a three-pointer.The CNN/Opinion Research survey shows that 71 percent of Americans disapprove of Bush. "This is the first time," said Keating Holland, CNN's polling director, "that any president's disapproval rating has cracked the 70 percent mark."But, I know what you're thinking: How can I celebrate this milestone? For a limited time only--262 Days, 8 Hours and 33 Minutes, according to the Bush Countdown Clock--you ...
