The Lowdown on Germany's Crazy Upside-Down House

Who says it's hard to flip real estate in this economy? In this house, you walk on the ceilings -- but you feel like you're bouncing off the walls. Visitors to Bispingen, Germany, have a unique chance to get a new perspective on the world when they tour an upside-down residence dubbed the "Crazy House." The off-kilter abode was erected in a zoo in the German municipality of Gettorf last year, according to the "Crazy House" website. Builders then hauled the home to Bispingen, where it was flipped by two cranes into its precarious position and opened to the public Saturday. ...

From Houses on Sticks to Cabins on Wheels: The Wide World of Tiny Living

Forget walk-in closets, indoor pools and multiple dens. In the world of the great recession, it's the little things that are making the biggest splash in the housing market. Tiny housing is going through a renaissance, and for many architectural experimenters, whether it's a 65-square-foot cabin loaded onto a trailer, an ultra-efficient cube or a repurposed shipping container, small is beautiful. Many tiny living units are simple, practical attempts at maximizing efficiency in housing, from small cabins in the country to city apartments that do their best not to feel cramped. Other projects ...

Gimme Shell-ter! Chinese Man Evicted From Giant Egg

(Dec. 15) -- A man in Beijing thought he had found his dream home when he moved into an egg-shaped hut, but unfortunately it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. After graduating from college and landing a job with an architectural design firm, 24-year-old Dai Haifei was having a hard time shelling out enough money each month to pay his rent. So he did what anyone would do when trying to cut costs -- he constructed an egg-shaped abode in the courtyard just outside his office in the city's Haidian District, according to TheEpochTimes.com. IBM's New City Sim is More Than Mere Child's Play

IBM's New City Sim is More Than Mere Child's Play

(Oct. 4) -- Budding urban designers may have been leveling neighborhoods and building fusion plants in Will Wright's famous "Sim City" series for 21 years now, but today, that genre gets serious with the launch of IBM's "CityOne." Check out the trailer: CityOne, like "Sim City," is designed to mimic the operation and development of a real-life city, except it aims to do so with much more accuracy, and its target isn't gamers with god complexes but real-life urban planners and civic leaders. In CityOne, players take an existing city and address a range of problems from water management to ...

Did Park51 Islamic Center Design Sketches Win Over New Yorkers?

Did Park51 Islamic Center Design Sketches Win Over New Yorkers?

(Oct. 4) -- Developers of the controversial Park51 Islamic center near Manhattan's ground zero recently received their first taste of reactions to the actual look of their proposed building, following the release of the first official architectural renderings on the project's blog last week. The unifying potential in a strong design must not be underestimated. Paul Gunther, president of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Classical America, recently wrote that "a great design would help Park51 transcend cultural borders." "[A great design] is what is called for today, whether through ...

Minnesota's Foam Home Goes on Sale

Minnesota's Foam Home Goes on Sale

(Sept. 20) -- Can a house feel like a home if it's made of foam? That's the question prospective homeowners in Minnesota are asking themselves after viewing the "Ensculptic" -- a bizarre residence constructed almost entirely out of polyurethane foam. Erected in 1969, the strange Minnetrista, Minn., property is now on the market for $237,000. KMSP Some people say it looks like a mushroom, and others say it looks like a spaceship -- but a real estate agent in Minnesota is hoping someone thinks it looks like a home. Built almost entirely from foam, the "Ensculptic" house in Minnetrista, Minn., ...

New Skyscraper to Compete With Empire State Building

(Aug. 25) -- The Empire State Building is by far the tallest, most iconic building in the New York skyline. But soon, it will have some competition. City officials voted today to approve plans for a new skyscraper to be located just blocks away from the Empire State Building. At 1,216 feet, 15 Penn Plaza will stand just shorter than the 1,250-foot Empire State Building. It would be located near Penn Station, the city's biggest transit hub. Anthony Malkin, an owner of the Empire State Building, has voiced objection to the project, which he calls a "monstrosity." Getty Images A proposed ...

WTC Was Influenced by Islamic Architecture

WTC Was Influenced by Islamic Architecture

(Aug. 20) -- Lost in the cacophonous debate over plans to build an Islamic cultural center just blocks from ground zero is a seldom-discussed aspect of the former World Trade Center itself: It was a complex loaded with Islamic architectural references. Having worked for the Saudi royal family on projects such as the Dhahran International Airport, Minoru Yamasaki, the Japanese-American architect who designed the World Trade Center, was deeply influenced by Islamic design, experts say. In fact, Yamasaki incorporated design aspects found in the Muslim holy city of Mecca into many of his ...

Burj Khalifa, World's New Tallest Building, Opens in Dubai

Asia has been winning the "tallest building in the world" race for over a decade now: the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpar, Malaysia took the crown from Chicago's Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) in 1998, and held it until the Tapei 101 in Taiwan replaced them in 2004. As of Monday, the title goes to a structure much further East, and over a thousand feet taller than the previous record-holder: the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which stands at a staggering 2,717 feet. The official height was kept a secret until the opening ceremony, which featured fireworks, streams of water and parachute jumpers, ...
