Study: Obese Americans Suffer 'Body Size Misperception'

(Oct. 21) -- For all the talk about a war on obesity, few battles are being won -- and researchers suspect it might have something to do with self-image and how those warned about their weight see themselves. In an evaluation of 2,056 people, all of them with body mass indexes that exceeded 30 -- the benchmark for obesity -- researchers determined that 8 percent of participants lacked an understanding of healthy body weight. After seeing nine images of different bodies, ranging from thin to obese, participants were asked to choose the image that best reflected an ideal weight and another ...

Paid Consultants Often Don't Disclose Financial Ties in Medical Journals

(Sept. 14) -- A plague on the medical report? In yet another example of the disconcerting relationship between medical experts and the health care industry, a major new study has concluded that the majority of doctors failed to divulge important monetary compensation when writing in medical journals. Writing in the Archives of Internal Medicine (itself "a bimonthly professional medical journal"), researchers from Columbia University warned of "inadequate transparency produced by current disclosure practices" invoked by numerous other medical publications. They evaluated 32 medical doctors or ...

Study: More Than Weight, Larger Waistlines Shrink Lifetimes

(Aug. 9) -- No matter the number on the scale, a bigger waist significantly increases one's risk of death from a myriad of causes, including respiratory disease and cardiovascular conditions. That's the sobering reminder from a major new study that tracked more than 100,000 American adults and is published today in the Archives of Internal Medicine. A team of researchers with the American Cancer Society followed 48,500 men and 56,343 women, all of them older than 55. Participants' waist circumferences were first obtained in 1997 and tracked until 2006. Within all categories of the body ...

Avandia Leads to Greater Risk of Heart Attack, Stroke, Studies Find

If you have diabetes and are thinking about taking the insulin-alternative drug Avandia, you may want to consider the ever-growing list of possible side effects. Two new studies out this week show that use of Avandia, whose generic name is rosiglitazone, can lead to increased risk of heart attacks, stroke and heart failure. Manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, Avandia has a history of rather glaring side effects. As the Los Angeles Times reported shortly after it appeared on the market, Avandia has been linked to increased incidence of bone fractures, as well as heart failure and heart attack. ...

Middle-Aged Women Drinking to Excess, British Study Finds

Middle-Aged Women Drinking to Excess, British Study Finds

A new study in Britain has found that middle-aged women are drinking more than they did in their teens. As alcohol takes a rising toll on both health and health care in the United Kingdom, the British government struggles with what -- if anything -- it should do about this problem. A joint survey by the British Liver Trust and Prima magazine has found that more than 1 in 3 women over 35 drinks more than they did in their teens. And 1 in 5 women over 35 admits to regularly binge drinking. In and of itself, this isn't really news. As I reported back in December on the heels of an earlier ...
