WTC Steel Angel to Honor 9-Year-Old Arizona Shooting Victim Born on 9/11

NEW YORK -- A piece of World Trade Center steel is being molded into an angel in the memory of a girl who was born on Sept. 11, 2001, and died in a barrage of gunfire in the Tucson, Ariz., shooting rampage that injured Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. The 5 1/2-foot-long fragment of an I-beam was to be picked up from a hangar at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Wednesday before being trucked to Arizona in time for an April 1 dedication ceremony. The Freedom's Steadfast Angel of Love statue will incorporate artifacts from the Sept. 11 attack on the Pentagon and the crash of United Airlines Fli...

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Recovering by 'Leaps and Bounds,' Doctors Say

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords continues to make a robust recovery, though she has no memory of being shot, her physicians said Friday. At a news conference at TIRR Memorial Hermann Rehabilitation Hospital in Houston, doctors said the Arizona Democrat is speaking in full sentences and her short-term memory is improving, ABC News reported. "She can repeat anything we say to her. Now, that's an important neurological recovery fact because what that means is that her whole primary language areas are intact," said Dr. Dong Kim. More Jared Loughner Arrest Photos Released

Two new booking photographs released Tuesday show a smirking Jared Loughner just days after the shooting rampage in Arizona that killed six people and injured 14 others. The photos were taken by the U.S. Marshals Service on Jan. 10, when Loughner appeared before a federal magistrate to be charged in the massacre at a Tucson grocery store that left Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) with a bullet wound in her head. One photo shows the 22-year-old suspect in profile and the other is head-on. Loughner's lips are upturned in a slight grin similar to the one he had in a mug shot taken by the Pima ...

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Speaks, Asks for Toast With Breakfast

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) reached another breakthrough in her recovery this week when she asked for toast with breakfast. The congresswoman's verbal request a month after being shot in the head during a rampage that killed six and left 13 injured has her medical team in Texas looking ahead to future milestones, Politico reported Wednesday. Depending on how her recovery progresses in the next two months, doctors said they might allow Giffords to travel to Cape Canaveral in Florida to see her husband off when takes command of the Space Shuttle Endeavour for a two-week orbital mission. ...

Giffords Asks for Toast for Breakfast as Recovery Continues

It may be the simplest of requests, but for family and friends of wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, it represents a milestone in her recovery. Giffords asked for a piece of toast for breakfast Monday morning, Politico reported. It's just part of what the Arizona congresswoman's doctors and husband call her "rapid progress" and "lightning-speed" recovery after being shot in the head last month when a lone gunman went on a rampage in Tucson. Pia Carusone, Giffords' chief of staff, confirmed that Giffords made the verbal request on Monday when hospital workers at TIRR Memorial Hermann H...

Giffords' Astronaut Husband Can Handle Space Mission, Experts Say

For an ordinary person, it might be impossible to put in a long, hard day at the office while a beloved family member lies badly injured in a hospital bed. But astronaut Mark Kelly is no ordinary person. And the evidence shows that Kelly may very well be right in thinking he can successfully command a space shuttle mission in April even as his wife, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, recovers from being shot through the brain as she chatted with constituents in Arizona. In studies of aviators, who have a similarly dangerous and demanding profession, "there are many examples of people dealing with high...

The State of Our Union's Political Civility: Many Are Hungry for More

The State of Our Union's Political Civility: Many Are Hungry for More

Does "the American people" want President Obama to make a case for political civility in his State of the Union address? Of course not. Despite the too-common political rhetoric, "American people" is a plural, not a singular, noun. There's no point of even slight controversy about which all 300 million of us stand as one. And even if I restate the question with the proper plural-noun grammar – "Do the American people...?" – I am not going to pretend that there's an unarguable answer for a majority. But there is some evidence that a lot of us would not mind another nod from the president ...

Brain Fluid Buildup Delays Full Rehab for Giffords

HOUSTON -- The Houston hospital treating Rep. Gabrielle Giffords said Sunday that her condition is improving daily, but gave no update on the buildup of brain fluid that has kept the Arizona congresswoman in intensive care. A hospital statement said Giffords would continue to receive therapy in the intensive care unit "until her physicians determine she is ready for transfer" to a nearby center where she would begin a full rehabilitation program. They said the next medical updates would be provided when that happens. Giffords was flown to Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center Hospital on Fr...

Federal Grand Jury Indicts Arizona Shooting Suspect

PHOENIX -- A federal grand jury on Wednesday indicted the suspect in the deadly Arizona shooting rampage that wounded U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. The indictment against Jared Loughner, 22, accuses him of attempting to assassinate Giffords and trying to kill two of her aides. It does not include two murder charges listed in an earlier criminal complaint for the deaths of Giffords aide Gabe Zimmerman, 30, and U.S. District Judge John Roll, 63. Those are potential death penalty charges. A statement from the U.S. attorney for Arizona, Dennis Burke, said those require a more painstakin...

Dad: Arizona Girl's Corneas Saved Vision of 2 Kids

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Donated corneas from the young girl killed in the Arizona mass shooting have saved the eyesight of two children, the girl's father told The Associated Press on Monday. John Green said the Donor Network of Arizona told him and his wife about the successful transplants. He said he doesn't know whether any of 9-year-old Christina Taylor Green's other organs have gone to any other children, but he's under the impression that her wounds rendered her internal organs unusable. Christina was the youngest victim of the shooting that left a total of six dead and 13 others wounded - i...
