Arson That Killed 8 Horses Investigated as Hate Crime Against Gay Owner

Firefighters in rural Ohio are offering a $5,000 reward today for information about who was behind an Easter arson attack that killed eight horses, including a week-old colt, in a blaze being investigated as a hate crime against the animals' gay owner. Brent Whitehouse said he noticed an orange glow coming from the barn near his farmhouse in McConnelsville, Ohio, just before midnight Sunday. He ran out to the barn, but the door jammed -- its hinges likely melted from the fire's heat. "I couldn't get the door open," Whitehouse told the Ohio news website WhizNews.com. "I could still hear the ...

11-Foot Cross Burned Near Mixed-Race Family's Home

Residents of an affluent central Californian town are outraged by thieves who stole an 11-foot cross from a church and set it afire near the home of a mixed-race family. The wooden cross was apparently stolen between early February and early March from Saint John's Lutheran Church in Arroyo Grande. It was torched early Friday in a vacant lot near the bedroom window of a 19-year-old woman, who saw the cross engulfed in flames and called authorities, according to news reports. The teen's mother told KSBY-TV that the family was the victim of racism because she is white, her husband is black and ...

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak: Mosque-Burners Are 'Terrorists'

(Oct. 4) -- Play with fire and you're bound to get burned -- maybe even by your own countrymen. That's the lesson that arsonists -- allegedly disgruntled Jewish settlers -- learned today after torching a mosque and at least a dozen copies of the Koran in Beit Fajjar, a Muslim Palestinian town in the occupied West Bank. Now they are taking heat from Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak, who Monday evening harshly condemned of the attack, even calling his fellow Israelis terrorists. "Whoever did this is a terrorist in every sense of the word, and intended to hurt the chances for peace and ...

22 Mystery Fires Frighten Houston Neighborhood

HOUSTON (Dec. 28) -- A 4-foot pile of ash and charred debris is all that remains of the Rodriguez family's two-story garage, which had been stuffed with tools, machinery, couches and appliances when a mysterious fire ripped through it earlier this month. It was the 22nd arson since August in a historic Houston neighborhood called the Heights, known more for its comforting small-town feel in the midst of big city sprawl than for being the center of criminal activity. Most of the fires have taken place in the middle of the night and nearly always in abandoned structures, though flames have ...
