Taliban Assassination Campaign Impedes Governance

KABUL, Afghanistan -- For seven years, Rahim Baz Mohammad was an Afghan police detective on a spectacularly perilous beat -- a province sitting directly between the capital and Taliban strongholds to the south and east. His case files bulged with kidnappings and murders. Recent victims included a government reform official shot to death in front of his house. In another case, a deputy provincial governor was killed when a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden rickshaw into his convoy. This month, after various threats on his own life by anonymous callers, Mohammad turned in his badge and ...

Suspected Killer of Pakistani Governor Spoke Openly of Plans

The police officer accused of assassinating Pakistani governor Salman Taseer reportedly spoke to other police about his plans and had previously been identified as a security risk. Malik Mumtaz Qadri is accused of shooting Taseer, governor of Punjab province, in Islamabad on Tuesday. Qadri, who was part of Taseer's security detail, said afterward that he was angered by Taseer's work to loosen the country's blasphemy laws, according to media reports. Police suspect 12 people, including six police officers, of abetting the crime by failing to stop the shooting. Qadri had previously been ...

Salman Taseer Buried Amid Tight Security in Pakistan

The assassinated governor of Pakistan's Punjab province, Salman Taseer, was buried in Lahore this morning under tight security, as the country came to terms with a killing that has exposed the dangers faced by Pakistanis who dare speak out against Islamic extremism. Family, friends and members of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party -- including Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani -- gathered in the grounds of the colonial-era Governor's House to pay their last respects to the outspoken secular politician. Absent, however, were numerous religious party leaders and clerics, some of whom had ...

Lee Harvey Oswald's Coffin Sells for $87,000 at Auction

(Dec. 17) -- The original coffin of JFK assassin Lee Harvey Oswald has found a final resting place for $87,469. The coffin was auctioned off Thursday night, more than 47 years after President John F. Kennedy was shot dead in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963. Four U.S. government investigations concluded that Oswald killed Kennedy, but he denied involvement. Oswald himself was gunned down just two days after the assassination. The auction was conducted online by a California auction house. Bidding began at $1,000 early in the day and ended when one of two top buyers dropped out around 10 p.m. The ...

From Russia With Love: Oswald Letter Auctioned Off

(Oct. 14) – A letter JFK assassin Lee Harvey Oswald wrote to his mother -- a key piece of evidence from the Warren Commission investigation -- has just been auctioned off for $7,050. In the letter, Oswald, whom the commission determined to be the slain president's sole killer, tells his mother about his Russian-born wife's visit with her uncle, a KGB agent. For nearly 50 years, conspiracy advocates have touted the notion that the government covered up important information about the Kennedy assassination, speculating that the Soviet KGB intelligence agency was somehow ...

3 Colombian Teens on Facebook 'Hit List' Killed

(Aug. 24) -- A status update nobody wants to see: Three Colombian teenagers have been killed after their names appeared, along with 97 others, on a multipart "hit list" posted on Facebook, according to multiple international reports. Even more frightening, police don't know who is responsible for the killings and the list itself, or the reason for the selection of names that appear upon it, although some of the victims allegedly had ties to members of drug gangs. Colombian news website El Espacio reports that it was the work of Los Rastrojos ("The Stubble"), which has been described as "one ...

Saudi, Syrian Leaders Plan Meeting Amid Tension

BEIRUT (July 30) -- The leaders of Syria and Saudi Arabia were heading to Beirut on Friday in an unprecedented effort to avert a crisis over expected indictments in the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Many fear that new violence between Lebanon's Shiite and Sunni communities could break out if the international tribunal investigating Hariri's death implicates the Shiite militant group Hezbollah, which is Syria's main ally in Lebanon. In May 2008, Hezbollah gunmen swept through Sunni pro-government neighborhoods of Beirut, raising fears the country could ...

North Korea Leadership Shakeup Preceded By Mysterious Death

In North Korea's game of political musical chairs, losers may face lethal consequences. At least that might have been the case of one particularly unfortunate aging DPRK party official who was killed last week in a suspicious car crash that some have interpreted as a clandestine assassination. First, though, today's news: Kim Jong Il attended a surprise session of the the North Korean parliament to personally oversee two significant political appointments that should pave the way for his youngest son, Kim Jong Un, to succeed him as the country's "Supreme Leader" (as his eldest son has been ...

Brazilian Police Chief Killed During Live Interview

(May 27) -- A police chief in northeast Brazil was shot to death in his car as he was giving an interview on his mobile phone to a radio show about the fight against drug traffickers. His anguished wife cried on the air: "Oh my God in heaven! Oh my God in heaven! For the love of God!" Clayton Leao Chaves, police chief in Camacari, was just finishing his interview with journalists on Bahia state's Lider FM station when the hosts and thousands of listeners heard the sound of gunshots and his wife's cries, The Guardian reported. "He was talking," his wife screamed hysterically. "He was giving ...
