That's because part of it will be from space itself: The International Space Station, to be specific. On April 12, Anderson will be taking part in a duet with U.S. astronaut Col. Catherine Coleman, also a flutist, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin's first manned space flight in 1961. Here's the catch: Anderson will be performing on stage in Perm, Russia, while Coleman orbits 250 miles above Earth. ...
If a previous minister of national defense of a big country started talking publicly about his belief that some UFOs are interplanetary vehicles carrying visitors to Earth, would you believe him or not? Well, stepping up to the plate is the Honorable Paul Hellyer, a former deputy prime minister of Canada and the longest serving current member -- ahead of Prince Philip -- of the Queen's Privy Council, which is made up of "prominent Canadians appointed to advise the queen on issues of importance to the country." As Canadian minister of national defense in 1963, Hellyer was responsible for ...
"Warning, warning, Will Robinson!" Ah, the phrase heard around the galaxy from the classic 1960s television series, "Lost in Space." It was the voice of the boy's mechanical pal trying to keep the young Robinson aware of some sort of approaching threat. And now, NASA is about to launch its long-awaited robotic companion to astronauts in space: Robonaut 2. In a unique partnership, NASA and General Motors have come together to develop a new generation of robots for both the automotive and aerospace industries. ...
Give him some credit. Give her some credit. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, shot in the head on Jan. 8 in Tucson, Arizona, has made so much progress in a Houston rehabilitation center that her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, decided to leave his wife's side and join his crew aboard the space shuttle Endeavour, scheduled to launch in April. And here come the critics, right on time: Mark Kelly is selfish, he's ego-driven, he cares more about his career than he does his wife. How can he even think of abandoning her in her fragile state? Hey, people! Mark Kelly is going back to work, like thousands of ...
One of NASA's top astronauts has been pulled off an upcoming space shuttle mission after falling off his bicycle last weekend. NASA announced the rare swap on Wednesday, saying Tim Kopra will be replaced by Stephen Bowen, a veteran astronaut who was on the last shuttle flight back in May. That means he'll be the first-ever U.S. astronaut to fly back-to-back shuttle missions, MSNBC reported. No shuttle astronaut has ever been added to a mission at the last minute either, just a little over a month before the Discovery's Feb. 24 scheduled liftoff. The spacecraft is heading to the International ...
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - NASA officials say an astronaut who had been slated for a spacewalk on the upcoming shuttle mission has been hurt in a bicycle accident. The space agency said in a release late Saturday that Tim Kopra will be OK. But officials are still evaluating if he'll be able to perform his duties when the shuttle Discovery launches to the International Space Station on Feb. 24. NASA did not release more details about Kopra's injury, citing privacy concerns. The 47-year-old Kopra lives in Houston and is a retired Army colonel. He was one of two astronauts scheduled to go on a ...
NASA today named a backup commander for an upcoming space shuttle mission due to be helmed by Mark Kelly so he can attend to his wife, Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, as she recovers from last weekend's shooting rampage in Tucson. Kelly remains commander of the STS-134 mission, which is due to blast off in April from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Astronaut Rick Sturckow will serve as backup commander to facilitate training for crew and support teams, NASA said in a statement. Handout / MCT Capt. (Nov. 18) -- Douglas Wheelock says it's the stuff of dreams. The NASA astronaut's photos of planet Earth as seen from outer space remain awe-inspiring, months after Wheelock first began to share them on his popular Twitter feed, @Astro_Wheels. http://xml.channel.aol.com/xmlpublisher/fetch.v2.xml?option=expand_relative_urls&dataUrlNodes=uiConfig,feedConfig,localizationConfig,entry&id=934605&pid=934604&uts=1290105981 http://www.aolcdn.com/ke/media_gallery/v1/ke_media_gallery_wrapper.swf Twitter Pics From SpaceAurora ...
(Oct. 21) -- You can't breathe on the moon, but now you can smell it. A Scottish printmaker has released a series of works that publicize a fact known to astronauts for decades: The moon smells like gunpowder. Apprentice printer Sue Corke worked with flavorist Steven Pearce of Omega Ingredients and Apollo 16 astronaut Charles M. Duke Jr. to create "scratch-and-sniff" moon prints. The two men designed the scent, which was converted into a printable ink by The Aroma Co. for the art, according to Newslite.tv. NASA Astronaut Charles M. Duke Jr., Apollo 16 lunar module pilot, is photographed ...
(Sept. 25) -- An American astronaut and two Russian cosmonauts have touched down safely on the steppes of Kazakhstan today after nearly six months aboard the International Space Station. But they arrived a day late, after their Soyuz capsule failed to unhook itself from the floating orbiter. The Soyuz's first attempt to undock from the space station had to be aborted yesterday after computer alerts went off, indicating problems with the capsule's hermetic seals. Opening hooks and latches on a docking port failed to open properly. But engineers used jumper cables to fix the problem, and the ...
