High Winds, Rain Hit South, Killing at Least 7

JACKSON, Ga. -- Fast-moving spring storms packing high winds, hail and lightning blew through the South, uprooting trees, knocking out power to hundreds of thousands and killing at least seven people. The storms were part of a system that cut a wide swath from the Mississippi River across the Southeast to Georgia and the Carolinas on Monday and early Tuesday. Skies were clearing in many areas that were hit, but tornado watches remained in effect in eastern North and South Carolina as the storms appeared to head out to sea. A father and his young son were killed when a tree fell onto ...

Home Price Declines Deepen in Major US Markets

NEW YORK -- Damage from the housing bust is spreading to areas once thought to be immune. In at least 14 major U.S. metro areas, prices have fallen to 2003 levels - when the housing bubble was just starting to inflate. Prices will likely drop further this year, making many people reluctant to buy or sell. That would push down sales and prices more. The depressed housing industry is slowing an economy that has shown strength elsewhere. And it's starting to hurt those who bought years before the housing boom began. In some cities, people who have paid their mortgages for a decade have little ...

Atlanta 6-Year-Old Sells Art for Japan

Like many a sentimental mom, Keely Muse kept all of her daughter's preschool artwork. She probably never dreamed she'd one day sell it to help struggling people across the globe. Tuesday Muse, a 6-year-old kindergartner, may not understand the scope of devastation in Japan, but she knows enough to want to help. "I saw people getting hurt and drowning," she told WXIA-TV. Her mom asked her to think of something she was good at, and to use that talent to help. "That's when she told me, 'I'm a really good artist,'" Keely told WXIA. She enlisted friend and fellow 6-year-old artist Stella, and ...

Is That a Gecko in Your Underwear ... or Are You Just Smuggling Wildlife?

It's a jungle out there for the people who are trying to stop wildlife smuggling. According to Richard Thomas, spokesman for Traffic, the wildlife trade monitoring network, the people who are trying to sneak endangered animals out of their native environments are getting more audacious than ever in their attempts. "We've had people who put birds into tubes to stop their wings from flapping and others who stitch the eyelids of falcons shut to keep them quiet," Thomas told AOL News. Hotel Introduces Superstrong Toilets, Able to Flush Golf Balls

Most people considering a hotel look at amenities such as swimming pools, spa services and gourmet restaurants -- not the power of the toilets. However, a clogged-up toilet is the sort of thing that people talk about on the, er, back end, according to Richard Senechal, the senior vice president of facilities for Loews Hotels. "Guests want a reliable toilet," he told AOL News. "You don't hear about that on the front end, but if there is a problem, you hear about it." Apparently, clogged toilets are enough of a problem at hotels that Loews tried to eliminate any problems customers ...

Jack Black Helps Name Atlanta Zoo's Panda Cub

ATLANTA -- Jack Black joined Zoo Atlanta for a naming ceremony for a 3-month-old giant panda cub, the only one of the endangered species born in a U.S. zoo last year. The zoo today named the cub Po after the main character voiced by Black in his upcoming animated sequel "Kung Fu Panda 2." Zoo officials say that in return for the name, studio Dreamworks donated money to the zoo to help with its panda conservation program. The zoo declined to say how much. The zoo pays China a $500,000-per-year lease to display the pandas. Black posed for pictures with the 10-pound cub, which made squawking ...
