3-2-1 ... and Liftoff: Manned Space Flights Mark 50th Anniversary

"Three ... 2 ... 1 ...ignition ... and liftoff." With those famous words first heard in Russian and then English, rocket engines burst into life, sending manned vehicles through the extreme "g" forces of vertical acceleration into Earth orbit and into the history books. On this date 20 years apart, two milestones were reached that set the tone for human space exploration. The Soviet Union took the first leap, surprising the world on April 12, 1961, launching air force pilot Yuri Gagarin into orbit -- a single 108-minute loop around Earth -- making him the first human to fly in space. And 20 ...

Was Lost City of Atlantis Found in Spanish Marsh?

Crime solvers follow the money, but experts searching for the lost city of Atlantis? In archaeology, "you should follow the stones," Richard Freund said. Freund, a University of Hartford professor, believes he and his research team have found the legendary island-city described by Plato in about 360 B.C. as having "in a single day and night ... disappeared into the depths of the sea." Using satellite photography, ground-penetrating radar, underwater technology and some old-fashioned reasoning, Freund said his team pinpointed the city in a vast marsh in southern Spain that dries out one month ...

Spacewalk No. 2: Astronauts Improve Space Station

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Discovery's astronauts took one final spacewalk at the International Space Station on Wednesday to get the outpost squared away before the shuttle program ends. Discovery is headed into retirement after this flight, and only two more shuttle trips remain, by Endeavour and then Atlantis. Spacewalker Alvin Drew quickly headed to a broken pump and drained the last bit of ammonia left to make it safe for handling in case it's returned to Earth on the last shuttle mission this summer. The toxic ammonia coolant - about 10 pounds' worth - was vented through a hose out to ...

And Now, Google Even Finds God

(Oct. 21) -- As Google becomes increasingly more all-knowing and omnipresent, it seems even God can't hide from the search tool. The Lord was recently captured in a Google Street View camera overlooking a lake in Quarten, Switzerland. Or so it would appear. The heavenly image was posted on gossip blog Gawker earlier this week and is the latest sighting of God in an unexpected place. Google Maps A curious image found on Google Street View. Just days ago, he was spotted in the rings of a fallen tree limb in North Carolina, and last month Jesus ascended to a group of vines surrounding a ...

Shuttle Atlantis Lands Safely in Florida in Space Finale

(May 26) -- The space shuttle Atlantis has completed what could be its last voyage home, landing safely back in Florida this morning after a 12-day mission to the International Space Station. Atlantis completed its de-orbit burn about 220 miles above Indonesia today, then streaked across the Pacific and the Americas to land at Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 8:48 a.m. EDT. "Entry is an amazing light show. There's a bright orange-white glow out the front windows," space center director Bob Cabana wrote on a NASA blog while tracking the shuttle's re-entry into Earth's atmosphere. And ...

Seven Questions for 2010 (and Beyond)

Seven Questions for 2010 (and Beyond)

I intend to toast the end of this decade with gratitude and a kiss, but a gleam is in my eye for 2010 and beyond. Will we learn from our heroines, heroes, villains and failures? At the start of a new decade, and at the end of a tragic, chaotic and glorious one, life has repositioned us for change. Will we make the most of it?My "wishes" for the years to come are framed as questions laced with hope:1. Will we demand a solid education for every American child? I've talked to kids who attend private and public, suburban and urban schools and have been grieved by gaps in their training. The good ...
