From Korea to Kokomo: Today's Obama News or a Glimpse of 2012?

From Korea to Kokomo: Today's Obama News or a Glimpse of 2012?

We live in a media culture where being a soothsayer is more profitable than it was in ancient Rome -- and today's TV pundits do not have to mess with the entrails of animals. Small wonder that after the Democrats' staggering 63 seat loss in the House, the urge to offer a definitive judgment on Barack Obama's 2012 political fate is as irresistible as betting against another term for Julius Caesar. But Tuesday's news -- from Korea to Kokomo -- illustrates how hard it is to know in advance which developments are transient and which will have lasting reverberations for the Obama presidency. The ...

Obama in Kokomo Makes Case for the Economy, Bipartisanship on Bush Tax Cuts

Heading into the Thanksgiving holiday, President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden traveled to a Chrysler plant in Kokomo, Ind., on Tuesday to tout the resurrection of the American auto industry and make the case for their administration's handling of the economy. Highlighting the resuscitation of the plant from near-death to full capacity, Obama suggested the factory was a model for the rest of the country, and asserted, "We are moving in the right direction." But the president warned that progress on other important economic issues, including the Bush tax cuts, which are to expire at ...

Suddenly, US Automakers Are Doing Just Fine

(Nov. 3) -- Back from the brink. The Big Three U.S. automakers posted solid sales in October, roughly two years after two of them received massive bailouts from the Obama administration. Ford said its October profits were up 19.2 percent from the year before, Chrysler saw a 37 percent jump and General Motors notched a 3.5 percent annual sales gain, The New York Times reported. Sponsored Links By comparison, Toyota saw a 4.4 percent drop in year-over-year October sales from 2009 to 2010, The Wall Street Journal reported, though the company has seen an overall increase in sales of 0.6 ...

Mission Accomplished? White House Touts Iraq, BP, Auto Industry Successes

President Barack Obama wasn't exactly making a tailhook landing on an aircraft carrier and unfurling a "Mission Accomplished" banner, but the White House took aggressive steps this week to show the American public that it has achieved some very hard-won successes. On three major issues -- U.S. military engagement in the Middle East, the BP oil spill disaster, and the American economy -- the administration has finally gained some positive momentum after what has felt like a protracted period of Nothing Good Ever Happens. For a White House and Democratic Congress badly in need of ammo in the ...

Obama Champions Auto Industry Turnaround in Michigan

Obama Champions Auto Industry Turnaround in Michigan

Championing the federal government's bailout of the American car industry as "the right thing to do," President Obama Friday took to Michigan to trumpet the turnaround of two flagship American businesses that had been left for dead just over a year and a half ago. Visiting a Chrysler plant in Detroit, Obama told 1,500 employees and local leaders, "You have proved the naysayers wrong," and avowed his "belief in the American worker and the American economy." He continued his whistle-stop tour at a General Motors plant in Hamtramck, Mich., where the new hybrid electric Chevy Volt will soon roll ...

As the Auto Industry Sputters, Is Car Culture Dying?

As the Auto Industry Sputters, Is Car Culture Dying?

Several trends point to the beginning of the end of car culture in the United States. But are Americans seriously ready to embrace alternatives to automobiles? It's been a bad few years for cars in America. First, there was the auto industry bailout to the tune of $110 billion. Then, two of the three big carmakers -- GM and Chrysler -- went through bankruptcy. Finally, just when we thought that the future lay in turning Japanese, even the beloved Prius went off the road (literally) and Toyota has recalled nearly 9 million of its vehicles in the last few months. ...

GM to Revive Bulk of Dealerships Slated to Close

(March 6) - Sometimes little guys do come out ahead -- that is, if you consider car dealers "little guys." General Motors said Friday it plans to revive some 600 dealerships the Detroit auto giant had planned to drop from its network. That's more than half of the more than 1,100 dealerships that filed arbitration claims last year to keep their doors open. ...

Toyota's Problems Could Be Suppliers' Problems

Toyota's Problems Could Be Suppliers' Problems

(Feb. 15) – They don't make Toyotas. But they make the parts that make Toyotas run. And in cities like Elkhart, Ind., and Orangeburg, S.C., factory workers and other employees could be severely affected by the Japanese automaker's massive recalls of about 8 million passenger vehicles. "I think any of us who are suppliers for Toyota, it has opened our eyes even further," said Stephen Hudson, human resources manager for Koyo Corp. USA, a ball-bearings manufacturer in Orangeburg. "It's all of our problems now," he said. All as in all of the more than 2,000 auto suppliers in the United ...

Ford Earns First Annual Profit in Four Years

Ford announced it earned $2.7 billion last year, its first annual profit in four years, and the automaker said it expects to be profitable again in 2010. "While we still face significant business environment challenges ahead, 2009 was a pivotal year for Ford," CEO Alan Mulally said in a statement Thursday. Ford had previously said it didn't expect to be "solidly profitable" until 2011. Ford arrived in the red thanks to broad cost-cutting, a $696 million profit in its credit arm, and growing sales of cars and trucks like the Fusion sedan and Escape SUV, the Associated Press reported. Despite ...

Opinion: A Practical Guide to the Next Decade

Opinion: A Practical Guide to the Next Decade

(Dec. 31) – So, we've said our goodbyes to the first decade of the 21st century. One that fell far short of almost everyone's predictions. Instead of peace, prosperity and flying cars, we have two wars, a global economy in tatters and cars that not only can't fly, but can't run on wind power, either. Perhaps the main reason we've failed to achieve these goals is that we set our sights too high. However, we never quit. So, in keeping with our interminable spirit, I've put together a list of things we'd all like to see happen in the next 10 years, along with a list of what we can more ...
