Cops: 'Obama Robber' Busted in Austria

VIENNA -- Austrian authorities say they've arrested a man suspected of robbing a series of banks while wearing a Barack Obama mask. Police say the 45-year-old German man is suspected of carrying out seven heists since 2008, the most recent on Thursday afternoon in the village of Fornach. He was taken into custody 2 miles away a short time later after a police dog found a bag containing the mask, a weapon and the haul. Police official Markus Mitloehner said Friday the unidentified man has partially confessed to the robberies and that "it looks pretty good" he's the one they're after. Make...

Cops: Man Robs Bank After Giving Teller Two Forms of ID

Turns out you don't need a withdrawal slip to rob a bank. Police say a man recently attempted to loot a central Pennsylvania bank, but only after providing tellers with the two forms of ID necessary to open an account. According to Harrisburg police, 35-year-old Daniel Rahynes entered the Metro Bank on North Second Street around 1:40 p.m. Sunday and told bank employees he was interested in opening an account, The Patriot-News reports. Cops: Bank Robber Caught After Taking Multiple Bathroom Breaks

For this alleged outlaw, it's straight from the outhouse to the big house. Police in Florida say they were able to apprehend a bank robbery suspect when he took two bathroom breaks immediately after allegedly sticking up a Bank of America in Ocala on Feb. 25. While responding to a call about a bank robbery, a detective spotted a man who matched the suspect's description stepping out of a portable toilet directly across the street from the scene of the crime, the Ocala Star-Banner reports. ...

Thieves Tunnel Into Argentina Bank Vault, Grab Deposit Boxes

Thieves in Argentina have made off with more than 130 safety deposit boxes from a bank vault after spending months digging a 100-foot tunnel from an adjacent building. The heist is believed to have taken place on New Year's Eve while the bank was closed, but it was discovered only when employees returned to work after the long weekend. Authorities described the tunnel as very sophisticated, with electricity and ventilation inside. "It was a really impressive job," Argentine prosecutor Martin Niklison told the BBC. He said that it's believed there were at least three burglars and that...

Halloween in December? Man in Hillary Clinton Mask Robs Virginia Bank

No sign the act was politically motivated, but an armed man wearing what appeared to be a Hillary Clinton mask robbed a bank in Sterling, Va., and got away with an unknown amount of cash. The guy, about six feet tall, walked into the bank in Loudon County Monday morning and demanded money, according to CBS News and TBD, the all-news Washington TV channel. It was the second time the bank in the far-flung Washington suburb has been robbed this year. No one was harmed and witnesses said the robber -- in addition to the mask -- was wearing a black jacket over a red shirt, the Loudon Times...

Thelma and Louise Wannabes Steal One Item Too Many

(Dec. 13) -- Two women in Oregon recently discovered that while you don't have to be a criminal mastermind to rob a bank, you may want to research the craft before trying. Authorities in Portland arrested 23-year-old Brittney Caudle, also known as Brittney Sykes, and 19-year-old Emma Westhusing following a robbery at Rivermark Community Credit Union in Clackamas on Dec. 6. Multnomah County Sheriff's Office Police say a GPS tracking device led them to bank robbery suspects Brittney Caudle, left, and Emma Westhusing. According to police, Caudle walked into the bank and handed a...

Bank Standoff in Fla. Ends; Suspected Bomb Remains Inside

Update: The Associated Press reports that a suspected bomb has been removed from a bank teller's body and remains inside the Florida bank where authorities are attempting to defuse it. The teller was reportedly kidnapped early this morning by three suspects who strapped the bomb to his chest as part of a plan to rob the bank. According to FBI spokeswoman Judy Orihuela, the suspects used the bomb-strapped teller to rob an undetermined sum of money from the bank and later fled the scene in a stolen red Ford Mustang. Know Your Burglars: A Guide to Bandits in the News

(Aug. 24) -- While his cartoon namesake certainly found himself in more than a few tricky situations, things never turned out as poorly for Shaggy Rogers as they are for the infamous "Shaggy Bandit." Busted and brought into custody last year, the alleged Colorado criminal is due to make an appearance in court on Tuesday for a hearing in connection to the run of bank robberies that he stands accused of. But the Shaggy Bandit, of course, is not the only aptly named suspect to captivate Americans during the late weeks of summer. With so many bandits to keep track of, Surge Desk offers the...

Is This Alleged Bank Robber a Guy or a Gal? You Decide

Is This Alleged Bank Robber a Guy or a Gal? You Decide

(Aug. 12) -- Ah, mugshots and scene-of-the-crime photos. If not for them, I'd very likely not have a job. This one's particularly amazing though. Here we see either a man or a woman allegedly robbing an alleged bank with an alleged gun in his or her alleged hand. Why alleged? Because, despite the fact that we're very obviously witnessing a person rob a bank, and since they have not been found guilty in a court of law, journalistic decorum dictates that I say "allegedly" when referring to what's going on here. Pima County Sheriff's Dept. This is from a July 21 robbery at the Bank of the West...
