Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! After years of snatching picnic baskets and duping park rangers without consequence, Yogi Bear appears to have finally been trapped by police in Utah. Officers from the Utah County Sheriff's Office apparently captured the famed Hanna-Barbera character on fishing without a license, immigration charges and other offenses. Yogi's cartoonish mug shot appeared on the Sheriff's Office website earlier this week, listing the suspect as a 60-year-old who stands 5 foot 8, weighs 490 pounds and has already been released on bond. ...
(Dec. 7) -- The thousands of hunters who set off into the woods of northern New Jersey for the six-day black bear hunt bagged 264 of the bruins on the first day. Monday's tally was the highest one-day take in the seven years of the hunt, The Star-Ledger of Newark reported. The last hunt was in 2005. The hunt is aimed at slowing the growing bear population, as the animals have moved in closer to neighborhoods, sometimes preying on livestock and searching for garbage. There's been one reported attack on a person during the first half of the year, the state said. Opponents, who lost a court ...
(Oct. 13) -- The accomplishments of the ursine allies of World War II are often overlooked, but not by the city of Edinburgh. They're building a $318,000 monument to honor "Private Wojtek," a 500-pound brown bear that served in the Polish Army in the fight against the Axis before retiring to the Edinburgh zoo. "Wojtek" translates to "the happy warrior," and the bear's contribution to the Polish military effort was largely noncombative. He was an unofficial mascot for the 22nd Army Corps, providing much-needed entertainment and distraction during brutal desert warfare. But Wojtek's greatest ...
(Oct. 11) -- Bandages aside, John Chelminiak doesn't seem like a man who was nearly killed last month in a bear attack. The 57-year-old Bellevue City Council member from Washington state was the victim of a black bear mauling Sept. 17 that took his left eye and almost his life, but he was unfazed today as he recounted the terrifying encounter and announced his release from the hospital. "I actually feel very good, very strong, continue to get better every day," he told NBC's "Today" show. "Yesterday I got the good news from the doctors that I'll be able to go home later today, so I'm very ...
(July 29) -- Separated at birth? On Tuesday, a black bear entered a house in Laconia, N.H., munched on some pears and grapes left on a kitchen counter, and drank some water (plus a few fish) from a fishbowl before picking up a stuffed teddy bear. As WMUR News reported, the bear, who had come in through a sliding glass door that had been left open, was apparently scared off when the family returned home. Homeowner Mary Beth Parkinson discovered the discarded teddy bear on the lawn, along with a box of Goldfish crackers. "I thought maybe ... [the teddy bear] looked like a little baby cub ...
I am woman bear, hear me roar! Sounding a call of the wild that's fit to rattle feminists and poll watchers alike, Sarah Palin has released a video ad called "Mama Grizzlies" that offers a heady mix of animal metaphors, female empowerment themes and anti-government rhetoric on behalf of her political action committee, SarahPAC. Many are already interpreting the short film as a kind of preview of a Palin 2012 presidential candidacy. And this is hardly the first time Palin has made mention of her love of grizzly bears (or of skinning and mounting them on her wall). Still, we here at ...
(June 23) -- As a cub, Knut the polar bear was known as "Knut the Cute." But now, animals rights activists say he's become "Knut the Nut" -- a bear with serious psychological problems. A study by the German arm of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals finds that most polar bears in German zoos are insane. And that Knut, who lives in Berlin's Zoologischer Garten, is the worst of the lot. The zoo denies it, with a spokesman calling the claim "ridiculous" and saying "Knut is fine," according to AFP. ...
(June 19) -- Authorities say a grizzly bear that killed a 70-year-old hiker near Yellowstone National Park is still on the loose, and are cautioning residents to beware. The attack happened Thursday in the same area where researchers had trapped and tranquilized a huge adult male grizzly earlier in the day, in the Shoshone National Forest about six miles east of Yellowstone. Scientists with the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team had put a radio collar on the bear and are now trying to trap it again, then use DNA testing to see if it was indeed responsible for the attack. Erwin Frank Evert ...
