Judge Denies Muslim Inmate's Lawsuit Over Grooming Rights

RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginia's prison system did not violate a Muslim inmate's religious rights when it refused to allow him to grow a 1/8-inch beard, which he believes is required by his religion, a federal judge has ruled. William Couch, a 50-year-old Sunni Muslim, is a medium-security prisoner serving multiple life sentences for rape and other convictions. He challenged the Virginia Department of Corrections' grooming policy, which bans long hair and beards. There She Is, Miss America, Back on Network TV

LAS VEGAS -- There she is, Miss America. The question is, will anyone notice? Those in charge are convinced that this is the year that the iconic but long-beleaguered beauty pageant re-establishes its rightful place in the nation's consciousness as it returns triumphantly to network TV on Saturday for its 90th strut after five years in the cable wilderness. ABC's live broadcast will begin at 9 p.m. EST. "America loves a comeback story," Sam Haskell, chairman of the Miss America Organization, told AOL News. "When you figure out how education and scholarship and talent and service are all put ...

Stinky Feet? Use Tea as Foot Deodorizer

(Dec. 10) -- 'Tis the season to curl up with a nice cup of hot tea. You can drink it. Or soak your feet in it. Or use it to disinfect your sweaty yoga mat. The brewed beverage is surprisingly versatile and has many different home uses, says tea expert Diana Rosen, author of "Meditations With Tea" (Citadel). Rosen told AOL News that perhaps the weirdest use for tea is as a soothing foot soak. Getty Images You may think tea is just for drinking, but the beverage has many other weird uses. She said tea -- especially the type with a light scent to it -- acts as a "natural deodorizer." When ...

Pumpkin Pie: Delicious and Good for Facials

(Nov. 25) -- If you're too stuffed to eat your Thanksgiving leftovers this weekend, maybe you should try applying the extra ingredients to your face, body and hair instead. According to skin and beauty expert Stacy Cox, who runs the Pampered People spa in Los Angeles, some Thanksgiving leftovers -- namely pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes and cranberries -- can be used as affordable moisturizing bases for at-home, do-it-yourself skin care treatments. That's right, that leftover pumpkin pie doesn't have to go straight to your hips -- it can go toward beautification instead of bloating. Getty ...

How Safe Are Cosmetics? New Bill Wants to Find Out

(July 21) -- Most Americans use about 10 personal care products each day. The toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, baby powder and other things that we routinely douse or slather on our bodies expose us to at least 100 different chemicals. Many of these, public health experts say, have been linked to adverse health effects like cancer, birth defects and learning disabilities. There is nothing that the Food and Drug Administration can legally do about it. But that may begin to change as two Democratic lawmakers -- Reps. Jan Schakowsky from Illinois and Edward Markey from Massachusetts -- ...

Facebook App Lightens Users' Skin Color

Facebook App Lightens Users' Skin Color

(July 14) -- Skincare brand Vaseline has launched a skin-whitening application for Facebook in India, which allows users to lighten their faces in profile photos. The app is designed to promote Vaseline's range of male skin-lightening creams, which -- so the campaign promises -- will unleash "what is hidden under your skin." The widget is the latest attempt by cosmetics companies to exploit India's "Snow White Syndrome," a commonly held belief that paler is better when it comes to skin color. Avon already markets a lightener called Refined White there; Revlon has one named Absolute White+; ...

Getting Better All The Time

Accompanied by then and now photos of ageless supermodels, Parade Magazine on Sunday featured an interview with fashion icon Iman. As Judy Howard Ellis noted here, the veteran model startlingly told Kevin Sessums she believes Michelle Obama is not "a great beauty," and that is a good thing because, "when you're a great beauty, it's always downhill for you." Instead, says Mrs. Ziggy Stardust, the First Lady is "interesting looking and so bright." ...
