Addressing the nation's governors, Obama also challenged state chiefs who have sought to balance their budgets through weakening unions and curbing employees' benefits, telling them that they should not demonize workers. "I don't think it does anybody any good when public employees are denigrated or vilified or their rights are infringed upon. We need to attract the best and ...
WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama is calling for a six-year, $53 billion spending plan for high-speed rail, as he seeks to use infrastructure spending to jump-start job creation. An initial $8 billion in spending will be part of the budget plan Obama is set to release Monday. If Congress approves the plan, the money would go toward developing or improving trains that travel up to 250 mph, and connecting existing rail lines to new projects. The White House wouldn't say where the money for the rest of the program would come from, though it's likely Obama would seek funding in future budgets ...
Choo choo! President Barack Obama is preparing to call for a six-year, $53 billion project to create high-speed rail in the U.S. His budget, which will be released next week, will include an initial $8 billion. There's "$10.5 billion already in the pipeline," says USA Today, pointing to $8 billion from the 2009 stimulus package, plus the $2.5 billion Obama called for in his 2010 budget. Today's announcement, made by Vice President Joe Biden -- a noted Amtrak fan -- and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, comes on the heels of Obama's State of the Union goal to have 80 percent of ...
MANCHESTER, N.H. (Sept. 28) -- Campaigning for Democratic candidates in New Hampshire, Vice President Joe Biden said Monday the party's base should "stop whining." Biden attended a fundraiser for Rep. Paul Hodes, who is running for the Senate; Rep. Carol Shea-Porter, who is seeking re-election to a third term; and the state Democratic Party. He said Democrats can win both races if they draw clear distinctions between themselves and their Republican opponents, and he urged Democrats to "remind our base constituency to stop whining and get out there and look at the alternatives. This president ...
BAGHDAD (Aug. 30) -- Vice President Joe Biden returned to Iraq Monday to mark this week's formal end to U.S. combat operations and push the country's leaders to end a six-month postelection stalemate blocking formation of a new government. Wednesday's ceremony will signal a shift toward a greater U.S. diplomatic role as the military mission dwindles seven years after the American invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein. Hadi Mizban, AP U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, left, walks with Gen. Ray Odierno as he arrives in Baghdad on Monday. Underscoring the shift, officials said Biden will make a ...
(Aug. 11) -- Caution! Your vice president approaches. Air Force Two was involved today in what is being described as a minor accident at Long Island, N.Y.'s Francis S. Gabreski Airport. According to The Associated Press, no one was injured after the "jet wash" from Joe Biden's plane damaged the wing of a smaller plane as it passed close by. The vice president was on board the plane, which took off, apparently unaware of the damage left behind. While admittedly probably no big deal, Surge Desk can't help but note that Wednesday's accident marks the fourth transportation mishap for Biden in ...
(July 18) -- Vice President Joseph Biden Sunday tried to get the political genie back in the bottle that White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs let escape last week, when Gibbs said there were enough House seats in play this year to allow Republicans to retake control. Appearing on ABC's This Week, Biden bounced back by declaring, "I don't think the losses are going to be bad at all." ...
NEW ORLEANS (June 25) -- Tests show BP is on target for mid-August completion of a relief well in the Gulf of Mexico, the best hope of stopping the oil that's been gushing since April, the company said today. The crew drilling the first of two wells ran a procedure this week to confirm it is on the correct path, spokesman Bill Salvin said. "The layman's translation is, 'We are where we thought we were,'" he said. Several such tests are needed to determine the relief well's location relative to the well that blew out April 20 when the offshore drilling rig Deepwater Horizon exploded. Once ...
For the past two days, news from Washington has been dominated by a Rolling Stone article on General Stanley McChrystal that has yet to appear on newsstands. But media outlets received it in advance, and they published snippets and understandably focused on McChrystal and his staff's disparagement of President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and other administration officials. The ensuing firestorm led the president to summon McChrystal back to Washington, and he may lose his job. Though the new issue won't hit newsstands until Friday, Rolling Stone has now made "The Runaway General," ...
Vice President Joe Biden this afternoon passed up a chance to comment on the potshots Gen. Stanley McChrystal took at his expense in the Rolling Stone article that has Washington in a lather, but the veep had no such qualms when it came to the World Cup ref whose call last week kept the U.S. from beating Slovenia. Biden was chatting about the soccer tournament with Attorney General Eric Holder as reporters entered a room at the Eisenhower Old Executive Office Building for a news conference on enforcement of intellectual property laws. Though he expressed a fondness for Slovenia, Biden said ...
