He has mentored six youths from adolescence to adulthood, while inspiring countless other African-American boys to overcome their own tough reality. Long, 58, was even named national Big Brother of the year in 1989 and was invited to visit the White House with his little brother at the time, Michael Johnson. Johnson is now a Big Brother himself. Long, with the help of fraternity brothers, hopes to enlist 10,000 mentors across the country. ...

(Nov. 24) -- That'll show 'em! Hours before National Opt-Out Day officially began, a young man waged his own, unique protest at Salt Lake City International Airport. On Tuesday, a Utah college student identified as Jimmy stripped off his clothes as he prepared to go through security until he was only wearing a Speedo bathing suit. On his back, Jimmy had also painted the words "SCREW BIG SIS," a reference to Homeland Security Chief Janet Napolitano. Jimmy captured the encounter on his cell phone, ensuring it would soon go viral, just as the "don't touch my junk" video had before it. Here's ...
(Oct. 26) -- Wrist-slaps, restricted options and "Big Brother"-esque monitoring systems aren't the only way to get kids eating healthier meals at school -- nor will the heavy-handed approaches prove to be the most effective alternative in the quest to push whole grains and salads over sodas and french fries. Instead, Cornell researchers, writing in this month's Atlantic, report that tiny tweaks to cafeteria layouts can make remarkable differences in what kids opt to eat. You can see a visual mock-up of their plan at The New York Times. Current efforts to revamp school nutrition often ...
(Sept. 10) -- Talk about a food fight. Kids chowing down at Sioux City, Iowa, schools could soon see their mealtime choices recorded in a computer database, in a move that's being met with ire from parents upset over what they see as an overzealous effort to "Big Brother" the contents of cafeteria trays. The Healthy Kids Act, enacted in Iowa on July 1, requires schools to reduce the fat and sodium in children's lunches. The initiative will also eliminate carbonated soda and deep-fryers and replace white bread with higher-fiber options. Prudent steps all, and ones being initiated at schools ...
The flurry of posts by my female colleagues on movies and TV shows has gone Right. Over. My. Head. I have never heard of this Julie-whatever movie they are debating. What's the big whoop? And although I've seen a couple episodes of "Mad Men," I think the show is boring and unwatchable. I'm way out of my league trying to debate these TV shows that -- let's be frank -- don't have a chance in heck of being on the cover of Us Weekly. So really, why watch? Go ahead and call me superficial, low-brow, cheesy, trashy, shallow and unsophisticated; I accept all those descriptions. So I'm ...
