How Do N.C. Republicans View Democrats' 2012 Charlotte Convention?

How Do N.C. Republicans View Democrats' 2012 Charlotte Convention?

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina -- It was no surprise that elected officials here would write a letter of welcome to the Democratic National Committee while anticipating the millions of dollars expected to follow the delegates, media and assorted visitors when the party's 2012 convention comes to town. We "extend our greetings and heartfelt thanks" to the committee, said the letter from the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners, read loud and clear at last week's meeting. It went on to extol the "Southern traditions and hospitality" of Charlotte's "vibrant, diverse community." But while the ...

N.C. Official: Richard Burr's 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Vote Sanctions 'Sexual Predators'

One of the surprises of the Senate's repeal of "Don't ask, don't tell," the policy banning gays from serving openly in the military, was the vote of Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina. The reliably conservative Burr was one of eight Republicans who supported repeal. In a statement after the Dec. 18 vote, Burr made clear his doubts about the timing of the change because "making such a shift in policy at a time when we have troops deployed in active combat areas does not take into consideration the seriousness of the situation on the ground." He nevertheless concluded that "given the ...

All-or-Nothing Adam Dunn Perfect Fit for Brash White Sox

All-or-Nothing Adam Dunn Perfect Fit for Brash White Sox

The White Sox and Adam Dunn go together like deep dish pizza and a cold beer, so it's pleasing to see the likable lug sign up for four years on Chicago's South Side. Their shared trait: Neither is deterred by naked defeat. Both march onward, looking for either the big score or the grand slam. The White Sox believe that scared money doesn't win. While that sounds bold and inspiring, the Sox actually live it. It's in their DNA. They're like Kevin Costner's golfer in "Tin Cup." Lay up? Hush up. Sometimes the Sox take a financial bath for their boldness, but here they are again swinging hard ...

Las Vegas Hoarder Found Dead in Her Cluttered Possessions

Las Vegas Hoarder Found Dead in Her Cluttered Possessions

(Aug. 28) -- A Las Vegas woman who had been missing for four months was found buried beneath a mountain of garbage and clutter in her own home. Bill James brought the search for his wife Billie Jean to a horrifying conclusion on Wednesday when he spotted her feet sticking out from the pile of junk that filled the room from floor to ceiling. The collected clothes, trash and knicknacks in Billie Jean James's house was so vast that sniffer dogs had searched the home without finding her corpse, The Associated Press reported. "For our dogs to go through that house and not find something ...

The Dugout: Homer at the (At Bat + Win Share / Secondary Average)

Bill James, the creator of ULTRA Games like Skate or Die, will be making a guest appearance on an upcoming episode of The Simpsons. I falsely credited him as that scary face coming out of my television to tell me about Defender of the Crown because the last thing a sports website needs is another God-forsaken post about sabermetrics. For those of you who don't know (and I'm guessing that means the people who ended up here by googling "pro wrestling" and clicking my name), sabermetrics is the analysis of baseball through objective evidence, resulting in a lot of really accurate calculations ...

MLB FanHouse Q&A: Bill James

MLB FanHouse Q&A: Bill James

Baseball scholar Bill James has written a new book, The Bill James Gold Mine 2010. FanHouse's Tom Krasovic recently interviewed James, the Red Sox senior advisor for baseball operations. Here is an excerpt: FanHouse: How confident are you in the advanced defensive metrics relative to the offensive metrics? James: Well ... they're not the same. We have a long history with batting statistics, which gives us an intuitive footing for making projections based on them. Let's say that a hitter has a breakthrough year, like Garrett Jones last year with the Pirates or Billy Butler with the Royals. ...

Rights and Rudeness: Isn't Being Politically Correct Simply . . . Correct?

Rights and Rudeness: Isn't Being Politically Correct Simply . . . Correct?

In Washington, Mayor Adrian Fenty has signed legislation to legalize same-sex marriage, despite objections from Catholic clergy and some ministers, and pending a 30-day review period by Congress. I can safely say lawmakers in North Carolina are very far from taking that step. However, in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County commissioners last week did approve domestic-partner benefits for county workers in same-sex relationships, starting in 2011. The 6-to-3 vote last week followed party lines, with Democrats voting for and Republicans against. Mecklenburg became one of seven municipalities -- ...

Roy Oswalt Wants A-Rod's Stats Gone

Roy Oswalt Wants A-Rod's Stats Gone

It's always interesting to see how peers react when one of their own get clipped for steroids. Barry Bonds seemed to get more vilification from fans than from players (except for maybe Turk Wendell). You would think that among his own, Alex Rodriguez would get the same kind of support. But not from Roy Oswalt. And forget asterisks. Forget about calling him "A-R*d". If Oswalt had his way, he would take all of Rodriguez's numbers and wipe them from the record book with a paper towel and some lemon-scented Pledge."A-Rod's numbers shouldn't count for anything," Oswalt said in a phone interview ...

Bill James Rips the BCS, Calls on Fellow Statistical Analysts to Boycott

In the years when the BCS works more or less as well as can be expected, and the top two teams play each other for the national championship, the powers that be in college football like to pat themselves on the back for using computer rankings as part of the BCS formula. "See?" they say, "We're using the computers to make sure we have a fair, objective system."And then in the years when the BCS doesn't work well, and college football fans are up in arms, the powers that be in college football like to blame the computer rankings in the BCS formula. "The poll voters got it right," they say, "But ...

Notes From the Clubhouse: Angels Look for Answers Within

Our MLB editor provides weekly dispatches from major league games in Notes From the Clubhouse. From afar, everything appears to be business as usual in Orange County. As of Thursday evening, only two teams in the majors have more wins than the Angels -- the Red Sox and Cubs, and only Chicago has a better winning percentage than Mike Scioscia's bunch.Look closer, though, and the problems are readily apparent. The Halos have outscored their opponents by a mere 19 runs this season. Going by Bill James' formula for expected wins, the Angels should be 41-38, not 48-31. Oakland, which trailed Los ...
