At least 297 people were killed across six states - more than two-thirds of them in Alabama, where large cities bore the half-mile-wide scars the twisters left behind. The death toll from Wednesday's storms seems out of a bygone era, before Doppler radar and pinpoint satellite forecasts were around to warn communities of severe weather. Residents were told the ...
MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Nine Alabama hospital patients who were treated with intravenous feeding bags contaminated with bacteria have died and the maker has pulled the product off the market, state health officials said Tuesday. Ten others who got the nutrient treatments that are delivered directly from the plastic bags into the bloodstream through IV tubes also were sickened by the outbreak of serratia marcescens bacteria, health officials said. All the patients were critically ill before receiving the IVs and officials have not definitively tied the deaths to the outbreak at six hospitals, ...

Gabe Watson was escorted by Alabama law enforcement officers as he arrived at the Birmingham airport for transfer to the Jefferson County Jail. Officers took him off the plane and out a side door without going past media waiting for him. Watson, 33, has been indicted in Jefferson County on capital murder charges for the death of his wife, Tina, during a dive off the Great Barrier Reef in 2003, just 11 days ...

Police have surrounded thousands of demonstrators near London's Houses of Parliament. A police van abandoned by officers in the middle of the crowd was attacked by a small mob, who rocked the vehicle back and forth, smashed its windshield with wooden poles and spray-painted an anarchist sign on the roof. However, soon after the attack began, other students formed a human chain around the vehicle to prevent further ...
(Aug. 21) -- The Deep South is certainly not known for its comfortable summer weather, but the heat and humidity so far this summer have been unrelenting and extreme. In fact, this summer might be the hottest on record in some cities, including Birmingham, Ala. June and July combined were the hottest on record for the largest city in Alabama, and with eight days with a high temperature of at least 100 degrees so far in August, breaking the all-time record seems likely. It's not just the intensity of the heat, which has resulted in some individual day records, both in terms of high ...
MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. (March 7) - A neurosurgeon has died after the plane he was flying crashed into the Gulf of Mexico off the Florida Panhandle. His passenger also was killed in the incident. WKRG-TV says Dr. Evan Zeiger was flying a World War II era plane in formation with several other aircraft when the crash occurred Saturday. The report says Zeiger came from Birmingham, Ala. It says Coast Guard rescue crews found Zeiger, his passenger and the wreckage in water 50 feet deep. It does not identify the passenger. During good economic times, politicians often take the moral high ground (and quick poll bumps) by opposing gambling, alcohol, and drugs. These days, many states and cities must consider fresh sources of money over strict morals as they search for ways to make ends meet. Here are the most significant examples out there, with more surely on the way: Gambling On May 14, Delaware Gov. Jack Markell responded to his state's $600 million deficit by legalizing sports betting. Estimated to provide the state with $55 million in the first year alone, the legislation is the first of its kind on the ...
