Man Pleads Guilty in Ohio Gunpoint Abortion Case

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A man charged under an Ohio fetal homicide law with trying to force his pregnant girlfriend at gunpoint to get an abortion pleaded guilty Thursday to attempted murder, weapons and abduction counts. Dominic Holt-Reid pulled a gun Oct. 6 on girlfriend Yolanda Burgess, who was three months pregnant, and forced her to drive to an abortion clinic, police said. Burgess, who was 26 at the time, did not go through with the procedure but instead passed a note to a clinic employee, who called police. Prosecutors had brought their case against Holt-Reid using the state's 1996 law that ...

Wave of Anti-Abortion Bills Advance in the States

NEW YORK -- Dozens of bills are advancing through statehouses nationwide that would put an array of new obstacles - legal, financial and psychological - in the paths of women seeking abortions. The tactics vary: mandatory sonograms and anti-abortion counseling, sweeping limits on insurance coverage, bans on abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. To abortion-rights activists, they add up to the biggest political threat since the Roe v. Wade decision of 1973 that legalized abortion nationwide. South Dakota Governor Signs Controversial Abortion Bill

PIERRE, S.D. - South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard signed a law Tuesday requiring women to wait three days after meeting with a doctor to have an abortion, the longest waiting period in the nation. Abortion rights groups have already said they plan to file a lawsuit challenging the measure, which also requires women to undergo counseling at pregnancy help centers that discourage abortions. Daugaard, who gave no interviews after signing the bill, said in a written statement that he has conferred with state attorneys who will defend the law in court and a sponsor who has pledged private money to ...

Opinion: Defund Planned Parenthood

Planned Parenthood has been misleading Congress and American taxpayers for many years. I know -- I was part of the deception. For eight years I worked at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Texas, and for two of those years I was the clinic's director. Here are the ways Planned Parenthood is deceiving the public -- and taxpayers -- about what it does. Deception No. 1: Taxpayer funds don't go to pay for abortions. This defies common sense and basic logic; of course taxpayer money helps to finance abortions at Planned Parenthood clinics. Other Views on Planned ...

From New York to Midwest to South, Abortion Battle Heats Up

NEW YORK -- It was only a single billboard, raised high above the streets of Manhattan, with a photograph of a black little girl and the kind of message the city's residents don't often see: "The most dangerous place for an African-American is in the womb." The ad was sponsored by a Texas-based anti-abortion group, which said there is a particularly high abortion rate among black women and that it wanted to show them there are other options. The billboard sparked outrage and allegations of racism in liberal New York City. It was removed by the advertising company less than a week after it was ...

Women: Pa. Abortions Left Us Sterile, Near Death

PHILADELPHIA -- When Davida Johnson walked into Dr. Kermit Gosnell's clinic to get an abortion in 2001, she saw what she described as dazed women sitting in dirty, bloodstained recliners. As the abortion got under way, she had a change of heart - but claims she was forced by the doctor to continue. "I said, 'I don't want to do this,' and he smacked me. They tied my hands and arms down and gave me more medication," Johnson told The Associated Press. Johnson, then 21, had a 3-year-old daughter when she became pregnant again. She said she first went to Planned Parenthood in downtown ...

Vatican Says Pope's Comments on Condoms Were Misunderstood

VATICAN CITY -- The Vatican on Tuesday sought to clarify the pope's controversial comments about condoms and HIV, saying he by no means suggested condom use could be condoned as a means of avoiding pregnancy. The Vatican's moral watchdog, the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, issued a statement Tuesday saying some commentators had misunderstood and misrepresented the pope's remarks in a book-length interview released last month entitled "Light of the World." The Vatican has been under pressure from conservative theologians to issue such a clarification amid widespread confusion ...

World Debates Pope's Remarks on Condoms

GENEVA (Nov. 21) -- The pope's positive comments about condom use by male prostitutes will help fight the AIDS crisis, health groups said Sunday, although they cautioned that his remarks fell short of declaring condoms an acceptable method of disease prevention for all. Speaking to a German journalist whose book was excerpted in a Vatican newspaper Saturday, the pontiff reiterated that condoms are not a moral solution for stopping AIDS. But he added that in some cases, such as for male prostitutes, their use could represent a first step in assuming moral responsibility "in the intention of ...

Is Couple's 'Birth or Not' Abortion Voting Blog a Hoax?

(Nov. 19) -- You read product reviews, blog posts and comments from anonymous Internet users all the time -- but would you trust them to make a life-or-death decision, especially about your child? Most people would say no, but that's apparently what one Minnesota couple had in mind when creating the site Birth or Not, a blog that features a variety of ways for visitors to input their opinions on whether or not the couple should get an abortion. "You can vote and choose whether we abort or keep our unborn child. For the first time, your vote on the topic of abortion can make a difference," ...
