Army Announces iPhone Blogging App for Soldiers

The military has long had a love-hate relationship with social media, striving to take advantage of Internet tools to promote its message while also wary of an online free-for-all it can't control. Now, in an effort to extend the use of social media for recruiting, the Army today released a free iPhone app and mobile website that would allow any soldier with a smart phone to blog from anywhere. The new blogging app, dubbed "Army Strong Stories," will allow soldiers to share videos, pictures and text from their iPhone. The mobile website is designed to work on a number of smart phones, ...

Arianna Huffington in Airplane Blackberry Dispute

Media mogul Arianna Huffington experienced some pre-flight turbulence when she "defied" a United Airlines request for travelers to shut down all electronic devices, leading one incredulous male passenger "to get up from his seat in protest of her continued chatting and texting," the New York Post reported. A testy exchange of words ensued between Huffington and the passenger, who is identified as Plainview, Long Island, resident Ellis Belodoff, and both were "hauled off the plane for questioning," according to the Post. Police did not end up charging either Huffington or ...

Does BlackBerry Need Better Lobbyists?

Does BlackBerry Need Better Lobbyists?

Elections are supposed to be about politics and public policy and big issues. And this election has its share of all that, given the stakes. But elections are also about people -- the kind of people who want to run for federal office. And we at AOL News wanted to get a better sense of just who these people are. So rather than asking a bunch of boring policy questions, we invited candidates for the House and Senate to answer 10 mostly fun questions. We got a response rate of about 5 percent. And while the results aren't exactly scientifically valid, they are still pretty interesting. Here's ...

How Much Does the BlackBerry PlayBook Cost?

How Much Does the BlackBerry PlayBook Cost?

(Sept. 28) -- You can't put a price tag on the Blackberry PlayBook. At least not yet. Research in Motion, the designer of the BlackBerry, announced the Canadian company's first step into tablet computers on Monday when it revealed the first edition BlackBerry Playbook. Although RIM co-CEO Michael Lazaridis revealed a good deal of the tech details behind the device -- 7-inch LCD touch screen, 1GB RAM, dual HD cameras to name a few -- the selling price was noticeably absent from the Lazaridis' address at a developer's conference in San Francisco. Of course, the blogosphere began to ...

UN Calls Out BlackBerry, RIM, Over Data Security

UN Calls Out BlackBerry, RIM, Over Data Security

(Sept. 3) -- When it comes to data security issues, there is a blurry line between private sectors and government -- particularly if the BlackBerry is involved. The secretary-general of the U.N.'s International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Hamadoun Toure, is attempting to define that gray area in favor of his constituents, calling on BlackBerry manufacturer Research in Motion to allow government law enforcement agencies access to user information, according to The Associated Press. Toure believes that governments engaged in fighting terrorism have the right to request the customer ...

BlackBerry Making Middle East Security Concessions?

BlackBerry Making Middle East Security Concessions?

(Aug. 9) -- Perhaps privacy is relative. Faced with the prospect of a sweeping ban of the communication features that make a BlackBerry a BlackBerry, Research in Motion (RIM), the device's maker, appears poised to renege on its iron-clad promise that it would never compromise secured user data sealed within its encrypted network. On Friday, DailyFinance reported on the Saudi Arabian government's announcement that it had struck an agreement with RIM to troll user data. This would be accomplished by having RIM put in a local server within the country. Previously, RIM routed and encrypted all ...

UPDATE: RIM Backing Down in BlackBerry Privacy Settings Showdown?

(Aug. 3) -- Well, on second thought, maybe the security and privacy of business communications is a tad overrated. Facing a veritable ban of its product across India and much of the Middle East, Ontario-based Research in Motion, maker of the popular BlackBerry smart phone, has agreed to open its vaunted security code to Indian security agencies so as to avoid the looming ban on key features, according to a report published in The Economic Times: The company has offered to share with security agencies its technical codes for corporate email services, open up access to all consumer emails ...

BlackBerry Blackout in Middle East: RIM Not Backing Down

(Aug. 2) -- Paging Dubai, paging Dubai, do you read me? For BlackBerry phone customers in the Middle Eastern metropolis, the answer may soon be "no," or more accurately, dead silence. But that doesn't mean that the company that makes the phones is going quietly. Over the weekend, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates announced they would be banning many of the functions offered on BlackBerry phones starting in October, rendering the popular messenger devices into little more than conventional cell phones. Not backing down from the threat, Research in Motion (RIM) -- the Ontario-based ...

Emirates to Suspend BlackBerry Services

CAIRO, Egypt (Aug. 2) -- The United Arab Emirates, one of the Middle East's most significant business centers, has announced it will suspend the use of BlackBerrys due to concerns that security authorities can't adequately monitor their data flows. Media reports say unnamed officials in Saudi Arabia announced that the kingdom would follow suit later this month. The UAE's state news agency reported Monday the decision of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) to suspend "Web browsing, social networking and instant messaging services on BlackBerry devices" from Oct. 11, 2010. ...

Saudi Arabia, UAE to Block BlackBerry Services

Saudi Arabia, UAE to Block BlackBerry Services

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (Aug. 1) -- The UAE said Sunday it will block key features on BlackBerry smart phones, citing national security concerns because the devices operate beyond the government's ability to monitor their use. Neighboring Saudi Arabia quickly indicated it planned to follow suit. The decision could prevent hundreds of thousands of users in the Mideast country from accessing e-mail and the Web on the handsets starting in October, putting the federation's reputation as a business-friendly commercial and tourism hub at risk. Blackberry data is encrypted and routed overseas, ...
