It was dubbed "the biggest event in Gawker Media history," and now it's live. This morning Gawker, Jezebel, Lifehacker, Deadspin and other Gawker Media sites unveiled their new site designs. The overhaul, months in the making, was described by Gawker Media founder Nick Denton as an opportunity to transition from standard blog layout to a format that looks and feels more programmed. While the old Gawker layout displayed a long column of posts in reverse-chronological order, the new design centers on a main feature with a sidebar of secondary stories. It's a bold new model for Gawker Media's ...
Gabe Zimmerman was the man behind the "Congress on Your Corner" events, organizing them, taking down names and phone numbers of people looking for help, doing the legwork needed to follow up on their problems. He was talking with the people waiting in line Saturday to see U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords when a gunman opened fire. "He was asking them what they needed," Mark Kimble, a speechwriter standing nearby, told The Arizona Republic. Zimmerman was one of six people killed in the rampage, along with U.S. District Judge John Roll, 9-year-old Christina-Taylor Green and three Arizona ...
The 911 calls came quickly and grew increasingly more frantic. First an appeal for help: "We need police right away, Boston Store, they're taking over the store, hurry ... kids are all over the place ... they're just everywhere, running, screaming, breaking things." Then a description of the mayhem: "There's a mob at the mall and people are stealing items ... they're ... running out the door with clothing ... there's like over a hundred people." The calls, released Friday, paint the scene at an upscale suburban Milwaukee shopping mall that went into lockdown last weekend after more than ...
The Big Bang was an act of God, with divine will bringing the universe into being, Pope Benedict XVI told a gathering of Catholics at the Vatican. "The universe is not the result of chance, as some would want to make us believe," Benedict said Thursday, according to Reuters. "Contemplating it [the universe], we are invited to read something profound into it: the wisdom of the creator, the inexhaustible creativity of God," Benedict told some 10,000 people gathered to celebrate the feast of the Epiphany. Benedict has worked to integrate modern scientific theories into religious teaching, ...
The Mega Millions jackpot may be doing just fine, but a lottery deficit in Georgia could put college out of reach for many students expecting to use a state financial-aid program to fund their higher education. Georgia's Hope scholarship program, the country's largest merit-based college scholarship program, promises four years of free college tuition to any Georgia high school student who maintains at least a 3.0 grade average. The program, which began in 1993, has historically been financed by the state lottery. But budget predictions estimate that the lottery will be down $243 million this ...
Call it citizen participation in government gone overboard. A woman was arrested Thursday morning after calling out anti-Obama shouts during the House of Representatives' ceremonial reading of the Constitution. The heckler, identified by MSNBC as Theresa Cao, was heard chanting, "Except Obama, except Obama, help us, Jesus!" during Rep. Frank Pallone's reading of the "natural-born citizen" clause of the Constitution, which stipulates that "no person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the ...
Craigslist users frequent the popular classifieds website seeking everything from a cheap futon to a one-night stand ("casual encounters" in Craigspeak). Jason Paul may be the first to visit looking for a life. American University released Paul into the world in May 2009 armed with a degree representing four years of study but filling only two lines of a resume. Paul needed a job. One hundred eighty cover letters later, he still needed a job. Jason Paul Jason Paul decided that for nine months, he would get everything he needed from Craigslist, including employment, housing and ...
You've probably heard the news by now: Mark Twain is getting an extreme makeover. An Auburn University professor, Alan Gribben, has decided to whitewash the 219 instances of the N-word right out of "Huckleberry Finn," and while he's at it, he's going to remove "Injun," too, for good measure. The new and supposedly improved version is to be published by NewSouth. The impetus behind it? To get the book back into the many classrooms from which it's been banned in recent years precisely because of those words. Is this a good idea? Short answer? No. Amazon.com "Huckleberry Finn" by ...
Before I start looking to the future, let me open with some family bragging. I've got two great grandkids who make me so proud. They're smart guys, both in highly gifted programs in school. The older one is into playing the guitar and has just started working at a shelter for abandoned pets. The younger one loves social studies but says he's best at math. These wonderful kids deserve a fantastic future. And I think 2011 is going to be great for them. But what's in the cards for later in the century? As I see it, the U.S. and the world are at a critical point. Either we face the problems that ...
