Bloomberg Apologizes for Crack About 'Inebriated' Irish

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has apologized for remarks he made to an Irish-American group stereotyping drunken celebrations on St. Patrick's Day. The mayor, addressing the American Irish Historical Society on Wednesday, quipped that he lives nearby the society offices and is used to seeing inebriated people spilling out of the Manhattan building on St. Patrick's Day. "Normally when I walk by this building there are a bunch of people that are totally inebriated hanging out the window waving," Bloomberg said. "I know, that's a stereotype of the Irish," he went on, as members of the ...

How Cory Booker Beat Michael Bloomberg in the Mayor-Blizzard Game

Memo to Michael Bloomberg: The next time a monster blizzard hits your city, do what Cory Booker did. The Newark, N.J., mayor has emerged as an online hero after he and his staff went around the city helping residents cope with the winter blast. Besides communicating with constituents on Twitter, Booker helped shovel snow and directed plows to congested areas. Check out some of Booker's tweets that earned him a lot of kudos: .bbpBox19927535001280510 {background:url(http://a0.twimg.com/profile_background_images/74694112/Cory_Booker_looking_up5.jpg) #9AE4E8;padding:20px;} ...

Cheap Thanksgiving: Serve Roadkill Instead of Turkey

Cheap Thanksgiving: Serve Roadkill Instead of Turkey

(Nov. 22) -- With turkey prices at an all-time high this year, you may want to seriously consider serving another type of meat at your Thanksgiving dinner -- roadkill -- since it's fresh, fast and free. According to Midwest hunter Buck Peterson, author of "The Original Roadkill Cookbook" (Ten Speed Press) and other humorous outdoor parodies, the most efficient way to do Thanksgiving on the cheap is to serve your guests freshly hit and roasted roadkill instead of a traditional turkey. "This time of year is perfect for nabbing a deer on the road. The rut is on, and bucks are only thinking ...

AOL Poll: Half Would Consider GOP Prez in 2012

(Nov. 3) -- Half of the American electorate would at least consider voting a Republican into the White House in 2012, while four in 10 say they won't and the rest are undecided, according to an AOL poll conducted as Republicans seized control of the House of Representatives. The poll also found that 50 percent of independent voters would consider voting for a Republican presidential candidate in the next U.S. election. So would nearly two in 10 -- 18.5 percent -- of registered Democrats. AOL surveyed 1,065 registered voters on Nov. 1, the day before Americans went to the polls and voted a ...

Bloomberg Report Shows TARP Profits Top Treasury Bond Returns

Bloomberg Report Shows TARP Profits Top Treasury Bond Returns

(Oct. 20) -- Returns on the Troubled Asset Relief Program used to bail out the financial industry, better known as TARP, generated higher profits for taxpayers than 30-year Treasury bonds, according to a Bloomberg report. The government earned $25.2 billion on its investment of $309 billion in the financial sector, which many critics originally believed would result in losses of hundreds of billions of dollars. However, concerns persist regarding the TARP program. "From the perspective of the taxpayers getting their money back, TARP has been a great success," Todd Petzel, chief investment ...

Opinion: Proposed Soda Ban Is a Bitter Pill

(Oct. 18) -- New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg recently submitted a proposal to bar his city's food stamp recipients from using their benefits to buy soda or other sugared drinks. Since becoming mayor, Bloomberg has launched a number of initiatives to improve New Yorkers' diets, including banning the use of trans fats in restaurants and requiring that restaurants post their foods' calorie counts. The sugared drink ban is another step in that effort, intended to fight obesity. There's nothing wrong with wanting taxpayer money to be spent on healthy diets. However, it's unlikely that ...

NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg: Terry Jones Has Right to Burn Quran

(Sept. 8) -- New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is defending the Rev. Terry Jones' right to burn copies of the Quran on Saturday, in what the controversial pastor has deemed "International Burn-a-Quran Day." "In a strange way, I'm here to defend his right to do that. I happen to think that it is distasteful. I don't think he would like it if somebody burnt a book that in his religion he thinks is holy," Bloomberg said Tuesday at a news conference about the status of the World Trade Center site, according to The Wall Street Journal. "But the First Amendment protects everybody," Bloomberg ...

5 Hard Lessons of the Dismal Joblessness Report

(Aug. 20) -- Jobless benefits claims jumped to 500,000 -- an increase of 12,000 in one week, the highest since November 2009 -- worrying economists and journalists that the U.S. job market may be worsening. Forecasters had expected the number of claims to drop rather than continue to increase. Here's what we can learn from the bad news. All of 2010 Will Be Bad for Jobs: The Business Insider's Vincent Fernando observes, "Whereas before jobless claims were merely 'stubbornly high,' and not declining meaningfully, now they've clearly gotten worse. ... What this means is that even if things start ...

'Inevitable' iPhone 4 Recall, and an Engineer's Warning to Steve Jobs

(July 15) -- According to one of Apple's senior antenna experts, CEO Steve Jobs was warned of potential reception issues with the new iPhone 4 well before it hit the market. That claim is just one more turn in the saga of what the company has touted as its most successful product roll-out ever. Reported by Bloomberg, the claims come from Ruben Caballero, who says he told Apple management of the apparent flaw in the iPhone 4's antenna design. On Wednesday, the computer maker announced it would hold a Friday news conference about the iPhone 4. Though the company did not specify the topics to ...

Despite Bad Economy, Crime Rates Plummet

Despite Bad Economy, Crime Rates Plummet

(Dec. 24) – Looking for some good news in a year full of economic woe? Crime was down in 2009. Way down. According to figures released this week by the FBI, the overall crime rate dropped by 4.4 percent this year. Property crime dropped by 6.1 percent and homicides were down an eye-popping 10 percent. In fact, crime rates have fallen to levels not seen since the 1960s. It may seem counterintuitive that at the same time a recession has forced more people to live on less, crimes such as car theft and burglary are down markedly in comparison with a year ago – down 19 percent and ...
