Officials said Wednesday they have arrested a suspect who has confessed to carrying out the bombing that killed 12 people and wounded over 200 on Monday at the main subway station in Minsk, the capital. The head of the KGB, what Belarus' security services are still called, described the suspect as a man in his mid-20s who is "not only unhealthy in his ...
MINSK, Belarus -- An explosion tore through a key subway station in the Belarusian capital of Minsk during evening rush hour Monday killing 11 people and wounding 126. An official said the blast was a terrorist act. President Alexander Lukashenko did not say what caused the explosion at the Oktyabrskaya subway station, but suggested outside forces could be behind it. "I do not rule out that this gift could have been brought from outside," Lukashenko said. The authoritarian leader, under strong pressure from the West over his suppression of the opposition, has frequently alleged ...
MULTAN, Pakistan -- A pair of suicide bombers struck a shrine in Pakistan Sunday, killing 30 people gathered there and pressing a campaign of attacks against places of worship that extremists consider un-Islamic, officials said. The practice of praying, singing and meditating at the shrines of holy men is widespread and much loved across Pakistan, but extremists consider it a dangerous deviation from the austere Islam they espouse. Several thousand people were attending celebrations to mark the anniversary of the Sakhi Sarwar shrine in Dera Ghazi Khan district of Punjab province when the ...
DUBLIN -- Northern Ireland police say a 25-year-old officer has been killed by a booby-trap bomb placed under his car. Neighbors of the victim say the car was put ablaze by the blast in a neighborhood of Omagh. They say the victim had only recently joined the police force. Since 2007, Irish Republican Army dissidents have planted dozens of booby-trap bombs under the private cars of police officers. The bombs usually fail to detonate and had killed nobody until Saturday. Previously, two policemen have lost their legs in attacks in May 2008 and January 2010. IRA dissidents committed the ...
JERUSALEM -- A bomb struck a crowded bus stop in central Jerusalem Wednesday, killing one woman and wounding more than 20 other people in what authorities said was the first major Palestinian militant attack in the city in several years. The bombing brought back memories of the second Palestinian uprising last decade, a period in which hundreds of Israelis were killed by suicide bombings in Jerusalem and other major cities. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Israeli police blamed Palestinian militants. The attack came against the backdrop of a rising wave of violence that ...
A sex toy sparked a terror drill in Russia on Monday, when a bomb squad was summoned to defuse a vibrator. Anti-terrorism experts responded to a call from a post office in Petrozavodsk in the republic of Karelia, where an employee had discovered a package that was emitting a bizarre ticking noise, The Telegraph reports. "The post building was ringed by the security forces and people were evacuated," a police spokeswoman told the press. "In the package the bomb squad found a vibrator." The pleasure device -- which was deemed harmless -- had reportedly been turned on "by accident." The ...
DETROIT (AP) - A judge on Tuesday set an Oct. 4 trial date for a Nigerian man charged with trying to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas Day 2009 using a bomb hidden in his underwear. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who is acting as his own lawyer, asked for a 2012 date and said he might not have enough time to prepare. But U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds said a fall trial was best for now. "We need to move this case along," she said. Abdulmutallab is charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and conspiring with others to kill 281 passengers and 11 crew members ...
At least 50 people died in a series of blasts in the Iraqi holy city of Karbala today, as suicide bombers targeted Shiite pilgrims in the third attack in recent days. More than 100 others were injured by the car bombs, and the death toll is expected to rise, police said. The bombs were detonated along the route of the yearly pilgrimage of Shiite Muslims to Karbala for Arbaeen, a religious festival that has been a frequent target of Sunni insurgents attempting to inflame sectarian tensions and undermine the government. No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but Iraqi officials ...
CAIRO - Egyptian authorities put up a heavy security cordon early Thursday around the main Coptic cathedral in Cairo hours before Christmas Eve Mass, using bomb-sniffing dogs, metal detectors and officers to try to prevent another attack like the New Year's suicide bombing of a church that killed 21 people. Al-Qaida in Iraq had threatened Christians in Iraq and Egypt in the weeks leading up to the holidays, and militant websites have even posted online lists of churches in Egypt to target with their addresses. Egypt's Coptic Christian minority, which makes up 10 percent of Egypt's 80 million ...
