Boston Hospital Performs Second Full Face Transplant

BOSTON -- Doctors at a Boston hospital have performed the nation's second full-face transplant, less than a month after the first. A team of more than 30 doctors, nurses and other staff at Brigham and Women's Hospital worked for more than 14 hours last week to replace the full facial area of 30-year-old Mitch Hunter, of Speedway, Ind. The procedure replaced Hunter's nose, eyelids, lips, facial animation muscles and the nerves that power them and provide sensation. Hunter suffered his injuries from a high-voltage electrical wire following a 2001 car accident. The donor family requested ...

Joke's on the Northeast With April Fools' Snow

BOSTON -- A no-joke April Fools' snowstorm descended upon parts of the Northeast early Friday, a cruel prank on a region that was finally enjoying a reprieve from its long, white winter. The spring snowstorm was expected to last through Friday morning -- April Fools' Day -- dropping up to 10 inches of snow in some areas in eastern New York and around New England, dispiriting people eager for spring after a long, snow-filled winter. In Portland, Maine, heavy wet snow clung to trees and street signs Friday morning. Robert F. Bukaty, AP A motorist passes a sign urging drivers to ...

Trace Amount of Radiation Found in Massachusetts Rainwater

Massachusetts officials are testing drinking water supplies after a routine sample of rainwater collected in the state showed low levels of radiation that likely originated from Japan's crippled nuclear plant. Public health officials said the sample did not affect the water supply but said further testing was being done as a precaution. "The drinking water supply in Massachusetts is unaffected by this short-term, slight elevation in radiation," Public Health Commissioner John Auerbach said on Sunday, according to the Boston Herald. "However, we will carefully monitor the drinking water as we ...

Public Restroom to Reopen as Sandwich Shop

Boston's "Pink Palace" once served as a restroom. Now it will serve sandwiches. City officials announced Wednesday that the 1920s Gothic structure on Boston Common best known as an unused men's lavatory has been leased to become a restaurant. Earl of Sandwich, a Florida-based chain, signed a 15-year-contract to convert the structure into a takeout joint, scheduled to open later this year or early next year following renovations, the Boston Globe reports. David L Ryan, Boston Globe / Landov On Boston Common, the "Pink Palace" is a former men's restroom that will be turned into an ...

Plucky Dog Survives Month in Charred House

A bleating truck alarm led a Boston woman back to her dog, who was believed lost or perished after a Feb. 23 fire but was actually surviving inside the burned-out house. EMT and college student Terisa Acevedo, 24, wasn't at home in her Hyde Park duplex when a electrical short circuit started a two-alarm fire, but her 1-year-old long-haired dachshund, Lola, was. The two-family home was destroyed and Lola was missing. "The police had sniffing dogs come and go through the house," Acevedo told The Boston Globe. "There were no signs of her at all." Acevedo papered the neighborhood with ...

Boston Hospital Performs Nation's First Full Face Transplant

BOSTON -- A Texas construction worker badly disfigured in a power line accident two years ago has received the nation's first full face transplant at a Boston hospital. More than 30 doctors, nurses and other staff at Brigham and Women's Hospital led by plastic surgeon Dr. Bohdan Pomahac performed the 15-hour operation last week on 25-year-old Dallas Wiens of Fort Worth, Texas. He was listed in good condition at the hospital today. The electrical accident in November 2008 left Wiens blind and without lips, a nose or eyebrows. In Boston, doctors transplanted an entire new face, including a ...

Italian Man Leaves $700,000 Estate -- and Pets -- to City of Boston

This gift comes with several catches -- the kind that bark and meow. An Italian man who died over the summer apparently left his estate, reported by an Italian newspaper to be worth $700,000, to the city of Boston. Luciano Visocchi, 62, left instructions that his animals must be cared for too. "The City of Boston, MA, USA, is obliged to look after the old dogs Argus and Jak,'' according to an English translation of Visocchi's handwritten will, The Boston Globe reports. "To feed the cat Rossina, easily recognizable from her great size, as well as the cats: Giacchino, Rossino, Pasquale, ...

Punishing Rains, Flooding Expected Across Northeast

Punishing Rains, Flooding Expected Across Northeast

The northeast is bracing itself for flooding today ahead of powerful thunderstorms expected to bring torrential rains and high winds to a region already soggy from the last blow. The tropical-like downpour will unleash more than 3 inches of rain along the East Coast within the next 24 hours. That could cause rivers in New Jersey, Connecticut and New York -- still saturated from Sunday's storm -- to flood. Matt Rourke, AP A pedestrian shields herself from a rainstorm in Philadelphia on Thursday. The National Weather Service has issued flood warnings along the eastern seaboard from ...

Obama's Education Trip: As Much About Campaigning as Classrooms

Obama's Education Trip: As Much About Campaigning as Classrooms

Given President Obama's recent (and very public) focus on education, one might think that he was stepping above the partisan fray to tackle long-term "strategic investments in America's future," as the White House would put it. Having decided that March is, unofficially, Education Month, the commander in chief went on the road to tout education reform, a historically bipartisan issue. But a closer read of Obama's message -- and the fact that his visits were coupled with party fundraisers -- are signs that this effort wasn't simply about schools and teaching. Despite whatever consensus exists ...
