Tempers Flare Over Use of Private Firefighters

(Oct. 3) -- The flames are gone from the most destructive fire in Colorado's history, but the debate is still heated. At issue are private firefighters who enter restricted areas with their own firefighting equipment to help protect the homes of insurance policyholders. More than 1,000 firefighters and 100 engines responded to the Fourmile Canyon fire in September in the foothills west of Boulder. Among them were 13 firefighters with five fully equipped engines who were contracted by Chubb Insurance Co., and four firefighters with two trucks sent by insurer Chartis Inc. "If there is cause ...

Wildfire Sets Sights on Boulder as Wind Picks Up

BOULDER, Colo. (Sept. 9) -- A Colorado wildfire that already has destroyed 170 homes showed no signs of relenting Thursday as wind gusts of more than 40 mph threatened to drive the flames eastward from the Rocky Mountain foothills and into the heart of Boulder, where some residents were warned to be ready to flee. Officials worried about a repeat of the devastation in the foothills, where neighborhoods once filled with million-dollar homes and scenic mountain cabins have become piles of smoking rubble. On one lot, all that survived was a tennis court. On others, all that's left are crumbling, ...

Colorado's Fourmile Canyon Fire: When Community -- and Twitter -- Matter

BOULDER, Colo. -- This week, my community is experiencing the worst fire in the state's history. So far, almost 140 homes and other buildings have been destroyed; many families -- including those of several firefighters -- have lost everything. About 3,000 people are staying with friends and family or at hotels as 6,150 acres in the scenic but rugged mountains burn. Fortunately, there are no injuries or deaths thus far, though four people are missing. Since the first smell of smoke and a glance at the strange amber-colored sunlight at around 11 a.m. Monday, following the fire has consumed ...

Colorado Wildfire Destroys More Than 130 Homes

BOULDER, Colo. (Sept. 8) -- A wildfire burning in the canyons and steep mountainsides near Boulder became one of the most destructive blazes in Colorado history Wednesday as authorities determined it had destroyed at least 136 homes in just three days. Authorities provided the dire assessment as firefighters encountered a tangle of rattlesnakes, downed power lines and combustible propane tanks and struggled to get an upper hand on the inferno. The Boulder County sheriff's office said Wednesday that 136 homes have been destroyed - a toll likely to rise as the blaze rages on and firefighters ...

Colorado Wildfire Destroys Dozens of Homes

DENVER (Sept. 7) -- A wind-whipped wildfire sent flames roaring through a rugged canyon in the Colorado foothills, forcing hundreds of people to flee and destroying dozens of homes - some that belonged to the firefighters themselves, authorities said early Tuesday. Firefighters were waiting until sunrise to count the exact number of houses that have burned, said Brett Haberstick of the Sunshine Fire Protection District. The blaze broke out Monday morning in Four Mile Canyon northwest of Boulder and rapidly spread across 5 1/2 square miles or 3,500 acres. Erratic 45-mph gusts sometimes ...

Media reports have identified the following institutions as being among those that have confronted bedbugs: Stanford University, Ohio State, Texas A&M, University of Florida, the City University of New York's ...

How to Amputate Your Own Arm Like Aron Ralston in '127 Hours'

(Aug. 26) -- In "127 Hours," the new film by Danny Boyle, James Franco plays Aron Ralston, the mountaineer who (SPOILER ALERT!) was forced to amputate his own arm after he got it trapped between a fallen boulder and a sandstone wall while solo-climbing a Utah canyon back in '03. Watch more YouTube videos on AOL Video Of course, Ralston only resorted to such a drastic measure after exhausting the more conventional means of escape during the five-day period he was stuck in the desert (during which time he kept hydrated by drinking his own urine). And lest you think this sort of things only ...
